Yesterday, my Raptor lost 2nd gear with no sign at all. One moment 2nd is there.....then it's gone!! Is fortin and an 02 gearset the only alternatives? THanks!!!

Sorry to hear that you lost the 2nd gear.... I am sure you knew it gooing to happen but when right.

I got the forin gears and the shifting fork and they will cost about $975. the reason I went to them because I do desert racing. I want someting to hold together in extreme condition.

You could go to 02 gears and lower the gears ratio a bit not much. and get the complete gears under $600. I have seen the post that 02 gears could be back order? It may be depending where you live and does the shop carry and so on.

Do you have pipe and what kind?

Bill

First off......thanks for the reply.
Yea.....I figured it would happen eventually. Did $975 include all gears? I am gonna go with the forged set-up over the '02 gears.......I don't wanna part with the '01 Ratios. I'm hoping that I did'nt destroy my entire gearset.....or maybe more. I rode it back to the truck with no grinding noises......only missing 2nd gear....so hopefully not much damage. I'll open it up and see this week. I'm running a P-bomp headpipe and an E-series silencer /w 14 disks with no lid. Where can I find those gears? Thanks again Bill.

Garyc660R

Here the number of Sam Coe Performance that they sell the Fortin gears
1-619-448-7498

They only sell 2nd,3rd and shifting fork. Just those three parts for $975.

It is pricey for sure.....

It won't change the gears ratio at all.

You shouldn't have any damage other then 2nd gear at all.

NittroT

Tell your buddy he will have same problem again down the road because Yamaha did not upgrade the 01 replacement gear at all.

They only upgrade the 02 gears that all.

Garyc660R,

Two items I have been trying to tell people to watch for after the tranny fails is the oil pump gear and the rod. It sounds as if when your tranny went it didn't come to a complete hault and lock up, so the rod more then likely did not get stressed. The oil pump gear I will bet is chewed up. It is the smallest gear and the only one that is nylon, on the back of your clutch basket. One big problem is, it is all one assembly. The only way to replace it is to buy the whole assembly. You might consider a Hinson basket while you have it all apart. I would bet that atleast half of the Rap owners who have had the tranny fail, have a bad oil pump gear, and it never got replaced. It's one of those items that is easily missed and can cause some major damage down the road.

I still can't figure out why Yamaha made it nylon. Any type of foreign partical that goes through the Rap motor seems to chew up this gear.

Also, if you have ever thought about going "big bore", nows the time to do. I know you mentioned it, but you know? You will have the cases split, and it could be prime time for the 727 kit. Just a thought. I will have my 727 in the next few weeks!

Good luck,
Swy
