88' Warrior - Build up the 350 or do an engine swap??
#1
Hey,
i'm looking for a cheap quad to ride with my friends. (Scrambler 500's and 400's, Raptor, 300EX's). it has to be cheap, but i'd like it to be decently fast as well. and suited for trail riding.
so i found an ad for this 88' Warrior, really cheap. i sent the guy an email about it and am awaiting a reply. but more about that later when i know something.
eventually the quad would need atleast a new top end. and one could be satisfied to leave it alone at that. but if you're going to do engine work you might as well spend a little more and get some real power. so which would you do: build up the Warrior 350 with a slight overbore, higher comp piston, maybe a cam and valve job, along with your other bolt on mods; or would you go for an engine swap? which would be cheaper in the long run?
which brings me to another question: what would be a good engine to swap with? i'd like for it to be a 4stroke and something that would swap in without a lot of work. ideas? and generally what kind of work is involved in doing a motor swap?
alright, this is open to all opinions/comments/and hopefully good suggestions.

My opinion, stay away from the '88. Start with something later that has the early problems worked out. Chances are ifthe motor is shot, the bearings and bushings, the chain, the brakes, etc will also need replacing. What sort of a budget have you got in mind for this project?

Hey,
well the ad said it looked pretty good and ran good. of course "runs good" differs from person to person. said it needs a new front brake cylinder and some other odds and ends. (not sure what they are, hoping to get a reply to my email). so the engine supposedly isn't shot. no way of knowing right now about the bearing and stuff though. if i go to look at it, how would i check to see if the bearings are ok or not?
the guy is selling it for $300, which is hard to beat if it does indeed run. my overall budget is limited though to around $1500 (including purchase price). but this is just going to be a trail quad for me to ride, so it doesn't have to be perfect. i can deal with scratched up plastic as long as it runs good and doesn't have too many problems. in other words, the big engine mods probably wouldn't happen up front unless the engine is indeed shot.
what can you tell me about replacing the front brake cylinder? price?
it also needs a new starter. where would i find one of those? and how hard are Warriors to pull start?
also, what problems would an '88 model have that might have been worked out on later models?
thanks,
bigmac
