I was on a poker run this weekend and waist deep in a mudhole when my chain came of ( 400 Xplorer). I got pulled out and got some tools but could not get the concetric to loosen to get the chain back on (more to that story). I popped the master link off and drove it out on the front end about four miles, I never got above about 10 MPH. Just wondering if I could have damaged anything I don't know about?

Now the rest of the story. While trying to adjust the chain we busted off an allen wrench ( I know its not the proper tool but sometimes you have to try and improvise) I am a Jar Head) inside the hole for adjusting the chain. I have not attempted to remove the broke piece yet. I wanted to look to the board for some opinions first. I hope that I will be able to remove the sproket and gaurd and remove it with a magnet. I'm sure it will not be that easy, thats why I'm posting, I'm sure someone has seen this before. Thanks in advance.

P.S. I found out why the chain came off when I got it home and started to find my quad in all the mud. Apparently someone had dumped a load of gavel into the mudhole I was in ( I guess they thought it would make a solid bottom or give them traction or something) because I found it packed all in my quad with the mud and thats what threw my chain. It was big stuff too.

Hey man,

Don't get so upset. Probably not many people have had to drive a 400 4x4 Xplorer out 4 miles with just the front wheels. Anyway, to answer your question, no........it shouldn't have hurt anything. I don't know about the broken allen wrench. Also, be real careful to check and make sure your transmission didn't crack or anything when the chain derailed. Good Luck.

Thanks Walexa,
I pulled the right rear tire to get a better look at hole for the chain adjust and I could see that the piece of allen wrench was still inside. I tried to pull it out with a magnet and I knew that it would not be that easy but, I did put a dab of JB weld on the head of a nail and push it in against the allen wrench and five minutes later I pulled out the broken piece. I was very happy. I got everything else put back together, gave everything one more shot of grease and a new coat of oil on the chain and I was off riding once again. I was really happy it didn't cost me more cash.
When the chain derailed it stayed on the front sprocket and just came off the back. Was it you I saw talking about a gaurd for the xmsn in case of chain breakage? And I have to say that is one awsome looking Xplorer you have. Mine is still pretty much stock because I have the extended warranty. Have you done any engine mods to yours? and if so what kind? I can't decide to keep it and mod it after the warranty or trade for the 700. I really like this bike.

skidkid,

Mine is slightly modded. It has been bored to fit a .020" over wiseco piston, has a shaved head for pump gas, plus I have the flywheel shaved (kept the electric start). Stock pipe, stock carb, along with most other stuff. I was running a boyesen rad valve but it messed up this last weekend, so I went back to stock.

As far as keeping/modding or getting the 700, there are many pros and cons either route. I do know that the 2-stroke engine is much less likely to overheat than the 4-stroke, especially with the big bore engines. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I've ridden my Scrambler out front wheel drive only a couple times. Just let off the gas to steer! Nothing is damaged.
