warrior ticking please help me out!?
#1
i got a 99 warrior that i bought used. ITs in good condition and as far as performance the engine seems to run fine but when i leave it idling i hear a ticking noise. Is this normal. if its not normal and u know what is causing it, will it damage anything if i use it like this or is it something that will temporarily affect performance until it is fixed. By the way, i dont have any mods except k&n filter and box. Thanks for the help!
PS if it is something that just needs to be adjusted, can u tell me what to do if it isnt too complicated. Im young but im pretty good with these things. thanks again!

ok so my valves need to be adjusted. WIll it hurt anything if i dont adjust them right now. ANy permanent damage or just a temporary performance loss. Does anybody have experience with adjusting. Im going to be going away friday night so i need to know asap.

in my opinion, they are important and need to be done asap! not good to just let them tick. as for adjusting them, it is not too bad. get yourself a manual, and it will teach you. i can tell ya, take off the front plastic, and the gas tank cover and the tank. this will make it easy to do the first few times. the parts to remove only take 1/2 hour, if your slow, lol.

ok, thanks. I dont know if ill get to it. Just outta curiousity, what gets hurt by them not being adjusted properly. Will something get damaged or just a power loss. Will i need any special tools or just a ratchet set or something? thanks

Running too long with loose valve will cause accelerated wear of the rocker faces due to more abrupt contact from all the slack. The tools to set them should be as follows: 5mm allen wrench(for the valve covers) 10mm wrench for the locknut on the tappet. I use a needle nose vise grip to hold the rod after adjusting,so it won't turn while locking the nut back down. set the intake to .003,and the exhaust to .006, and you should be ready to run. You want a good drag on the feeler guage,to make sure it is snug engough. Then what I do is put the valve covers back on,set the gas tank back on,hook up the fuel line, and start it up. I listen,if it sounds good, put it all back together,if it still ticks, take the valve covers off and recheck. I assume you know how to set up on TDC before making any settings !!!!
