Polaris has no engine braking on front wheels..This can making going down steep hills dangerous.. The rear wheels lock up and you slide down..I have a 500 Sportsman..I consider this a fatal flaw..and would not recommened Polaris for this reason..Unless you never go down hill...

Mine is a 2002 also ...The way four wheel lockup works on Polaris is that the front and and back wheels are not locked together ,in four wheel mode, unless the back wheels start to slip..as in a mudhole..which is not the case when you are going down hill..so going down hills the engine braking is applied to only the back wheels ..leaving you to have to use the brakes ..which tend to lock the wheels..causing you to slide..
This was comfirmed by the mechanic at the dealer where I bought my bike...But other then that I like the bike it's a great climber and mudder and is comfortable...I haven't had any trouble with it yet...

hotdog is right. uphills are sometimes tricky when one front wheel is airborn, then all the power goes to the wheel on the ground causing the quad to pull in that direction. but other than that it's an awesome design!

I'm surprised no one has said this before. Go down the hill as normal but put the quad in reverse and work the throttle till your down the hill. Its easy to do. Same with going up a hill and stalling it, don't let it go down the hill like mad, just keep it in 1st gear and let it down slowing while working the throttle. This works great on manual tranny quads but I'm not sure on the auto variety.
