It doesn't seem to want to idle smooth or start and idle on its own. The owner before me rebuilt it I guess. Anybody with experience on this?

Where to start?

First thing, take the carb apart and clean the hell out of it. Next and highly recommened, buy a carb rebuilt kit, $12. Next clean your air filter.

Now to adjust it to idle properly. 1st turn the airscrew all the way in and then back it out a total of two and one half times. This is where it is supposed to be set but you have many factors that will prevent it from idling properly.

Here are a few:
1.Dirty or no air filter,
2.Timming off
3.Worm Needle jet, card rebuild kit will take care of this.
4.Improper carb float level, too high a float level will flood you carb causing a overly rich mixture, to low will cause the bike to starve for gas at Wideopen throttle.
5.Wrong Idle (slow)jet.

Most likely, you will probably need a rebuild (very easy to do with the kit) or change the idle jet.

If it is the idle jets, here are some tip on identifying the condition(too lean or too rich)

Unresponsive throttle response at bottom end (just off idle) and black smoke coming from exhaust are signs of a rich mixture. Drop one size ilde(slow) jet at a time until problem is fixed.

If while idling you give it gas and the bike hangs (stays reved) for a few seconds then you have a lean mixture and need to get a bigger idle jet.

I hope this helps.

Is the air screw the one on the bottom facing down? And then the idle on the side correct?

Why are you even still fooling around with an old POS like that??

Serious fellow, get yourself a early model quad if nothing else. They can be had for less than a grand.

Just buy a new carburetor if you insist on fixing this thing. All the rebuilds in the world isn't going to help a 20 year old carburetor.
