Best one by far is the Honda 90. Solid and reliable and will last forever. Does not have electric start but starts on first pull so it's not really needed. Only other bad point is higher price but - you get what you pay for.

Suzuki/Kawasaki LT80 & LT50 are also good bikes, just a bit smaller in size.

Most of the other mini's are all the same bike with different plastic. They are getting better but generally are lacking in overall quality and durability.

How big is he? Size has more to do with appropriate machines than the CPSC recommendations. Skill plays a factor too. My eldest is 12, 5'6, 120 lbs and far too large and, frankly, skilled for the 90cc machines (he broke one taking it somewhere quite reasonable for his age).

That said, I've heard it said that the Kasea Skyhawks are among the best kid sized ATV's. The Honda rates up there too. Most of the other machines are made by the same few korean companies despite what their "brand" might be.

There's a fellow here, I think his name is Raptor720 or something like that, who's quite outspoken on this topic. Perhaps he'll chime in here.

 

my baby sister, 6 and a half years old, just got a new raptor 80. it has good power and is easy to control. electric start, 3 speeds, all up, no clutch. you can govern the throttle by way of the screw in the little box on the bar. with the screw backed out most of the way, the quad will do about 40 with my 15 year old, 100 lb sister on it. if you want, you can take the cover off the intake and watch the performance skyrocket.

the plastic looks really cool too.
