Front Driven Shive Hard to Remove Yes or No
#1
Has anyone tried to remove the front driven shive at all. I tried tonight and what a stick in the mud. There is a shaft down further inside the shive tried pulling frome there and gave up, afraid of breaking the outer shive. I found the bottom of the shives are worn with a slight groove after removal I intend on filling in the grooves with weld and machine to finish. Man is that thing on tight has anyone had success in pulling it from the tapered shaft.

EPI makes a puller for the drive clutch. So does Kawi. It's just a bolt that is machined to push the clutch off. Maybe Nyroc has got something geared up that would work (All I do is borrow the puller from my dealer).

If you are trying to remove the whole mess, GET THE SERVICE MANUAL. I haven't done it, but in the manual, it looks to be more involved, and certainly more difficult to service, than the driven converter. There are several special tools listed to service the unit.

Fortuneately I have a manual but it doesn't show the shape of the puller all it show is how it fits in the shive. The book shows the cut away and parts but now how it fits to remove the shive. I tried a machined shaft to fit on to the lower shaft inside the shive then a puller on the outside of the shive and the force to move this thing is incredible. All it shows is a tapered pressure fit cone that the shive fits on so it can't be that difficult to remove. Usually after the bolt is removed just a tap and it should come off just like a tapered pressure fit on a drill press.
Have any of you heard or had the driven shives replaced. There must be an easy solution I really don't want to contact the dealer as they are not the brightest crayon in the pack. Thanks for help gentlemen have fun.

Hey Alltoys, are you talking about the DRIVE SHEAVE? The front pulley is the drive pulley, and each half is a sheave. I just wanted to make sure we are not talking about the driven (rear).
I bought a pulley puller from EPI. I am going to take a picture of it in a second and post it on my website in the tech tips area. When you see it, you may realize that being longer than the bolt, does not tighten the sheave on the shaft but pulls it off using the threads.

Nyroc yes the front driven pulley my mistake that's the one I meant. You say there is a bolt that is longer than the original and by threading it in it pulls the whole unit off. I wonder how that works I will have to see it work thanks for the help. Have you had this gizmo off I thought it would be a simple yank but not so.

I never removed the drive pulley. I got the tool because the manual said to remove it to cahnge the belt. But I later found out that the belt comes off really easily without removing the drive (front) pulley.
The tool, being long, bottoms out in the crank, so if you turn it, it pulls the pulley off. The pulley is mounted using a taper on the crank. So although it fits tight right now, as soon as it moves just a sliver, off it will come.
It is not very expensive, from EPI. I won't let mine out of my sight, since there is no other way to get the pulley off.
I finally took a picture of it, here. My camera is cranky lately, and fights with the PC and won't give up any photos. But, I was able to squeeze this one last photo out of it.
