Default Testing Speedo wheel sensor on sportsman

It looks relatively simple to test the speedo itself according to the directions in the shop manual for the 01 HO (p. 10.26 I think). You just use a voltmeter. It looks like it may be a little more difficult testing the sensor. The manual references a polaris tool number and it looks like it has 3 wires on the tool that connect to the three prongs of the speedo plug. It also has an led light on it that is supposed to flash as you rotate the right front wheel if the sensor is good. Has anyone adapted a homemade tool to do this or come up with some other way of testing it?

Well, does anyone know of any other way to test the sensor? Someone told me I could use a magnet to test it by removing the sensor from the caliper and holding the magnet to the sensor. If the speedo moves at, then the sensor is good, if it doesn't, no good. Anyone ever tried this?
