HONDA 300 Problem - Please Help!
#1
I have a 1996 300 4x4. It has never had a problem. Until yesterday I had not ridden it or started it in about 4 months.
Yesterday, I started it and it sounded funny. It sounds like it's revving up too high and it will not run at all with the choke off. Also, for awhile fuel was draining out of a tube from the carbeurator and onto the ground. It stopped draining fuel, but it still will not run with the choke off, even when it's warmed up.
I am hoping this is just an idle problem. What do you think? Does anyone think I can fix this by just adjusting the idle screw? Could the air filter have anything to do with this?
Thanks.

You'll have to take off the carb and clean it. Sounds like sitting for so long varnished up the carb, and the float got stuck, too, thats why gas ran out the overflow tube. Just disassemble it and blow out all the passages with carb cleaner and follow up with an air hose to dry it out, then it should run like before. Next time you leave it sit for a long time, shut off the gas and drain the carb to prevent old gas from drying up and leaving deposites in your carb.

Thanks. I am not in any way a mechanic. Do you think I should try to do that myself or take it to a shop? Is there any other way to clean it out other than taking it off? Thanks.

At 45 to 60 bucks an hour, I wouldn't take it to a dealer for something as simple as cleaning the carb. Either find a buddy that can help you out, or buy a manual for your quad, it will give you easy to follow instructions for servicing your quad and taking care of most repairs. Don't be scared of taking the carb off, get someone to give you a hand, and you will see it's not a big deal after you do it once. Then think how proud you'll feel when you touch the starter and it purrs to life, all because of you !!!

Sounds like one of those Tennessee dirt dobbers have blocked your vent line to the carburetor.
A carb cleaning never hurt anyone either

Thanks for the help - I think I fixed it. I followed one of the "Tech Tips". I poured some cleaner in the gas tank and ran it for awhile - that alone did not work. Then, I drained the gas out of the carb, disconnected the fuel line and sprayed an entire can of carb cleaner into the carb that I bought at AutoZone. I let it drain out and a fair amount of debris came out (I guess - I don't really how much it takes to mess the carb up).
While I will not know for sure until I ride it this weekend, it sounds fine now.
Thanks.
