Default Need info on 97 Scrambler 500 4x4

I'm lookin' at a 97 Scrambler500 4x4 but don't know a thing about Polaris.I wanted an inexspensive sport 4x4 that I could take in and out of 4 wheel drive and a cousin has this one.It needs some work so I need to know if it's worth it.The clutch is hitting the cover at idle but when it's revved it stops.I know that the cover needs to be replaced because it looks warped and is cracked in several places. He thinks the clutch is bad but with the cover off it seems to work correctly.I rode it once before the belt came apart,I don't think the belt had ever been changed. The quad has been sitting outside uncovered for sometime So there is a little rust. The 4 wheel drive works and it cranks easily.I know it will need to be serviced as well as new sprockets, chains etc. When he got it ,it had a blown head gasket. He spent around $500 on the engine to get it fixed and had the radiator rodded out.He wants $1400 for it (this is what he has in it)and it seems fair to me but I don't know enough about it to decide.

Thanks,
Brian

Sounds to me like it's been rode hard and put away wet a few too many times. I bought my 99 400 Scrammy from a dealer, for $2800. I think I got a good deal on it. Any way just a comparison for you. Mine is in good shape, and has the fox shocks installed.

Also the 97 SCR500 has the NON HO motor. It is a big time dog compared to the newer (98 and up) Scrambler 500's.

$1400 may not sound too bad for a 500cc 4x4 quad but this particular one may nickel and dime you everytime you ride it. The only plus side is the initial price but it will keep going up. If it was cared for better maybe?

Minuses
1. non ho motor (dog)
2. chain drive (lots of $ and maint.)
3. non concentric (hard on chains)
4. not well maintained (biggest one)

pluses
1. cheap (initially)

Sorry but in my opinion it`s not worth it.

My brother bought a '00 2x4 500 Scrambler this past weekend. What is the top speed of this quad? Will in hang w/ a 400ex in a drag?

Not sure on the 500, but i think it's similar to mine. I can get to about 65mph, I don't know if that's exact because I don't have GPS or anything but I think it's close.
