Piston Seized
#1
Today I was riding at the dunes and hit a little bump and my quad kinda bogged (like when you hit a big jump and it takes a sec or two to get the gas flowing again). But it completely died this time. It started right back up but acted a little different like it wasn't getting as much fuel. Then it died again. I started looking for pinched fuel lines but didn't find any. Started back up again and started to run better. About 5 minutes later it started to act the same again then ching and nothing more. Piston won't move. Can't start it by starter or rope. Then on closer inspection I noticed that the fuel setting was on reserve. I don't know how it got there.Hmmmmm in-laws maybe. I think that it picked up some trash when I hit that bump and got in the main jet thus leaning out the mixture. Anyone else with this problem? Also how do you free a seized piston when you got to take it apart? Oh yeah this is on a '01 Polaris Scramber 400. It was running great until the little hic-up. Thoughts anyone. Any replys appreciated. Thanks Shawn.

Bad fuel is a bad issue right now in the gasoline world. And!
Sand enters the fuel tank when the cap is off. The micro particals pass through the filter and cause extra wear on piston/cylinder/crank/crank bearings/seals. And when engine gets hot runs out of fuel, this causes a very lean condition which could result in seizer!
Tool apart 250R tank and found long tube screen 3/4's pluged with sand!
Take head off, spray down top of piston with WD/40 or similar spray. Then get a big hammer. NO
Then try to pull cylinder up and off of piston. Spray and lightly tap top of piston to remove cylinder.
Still stuck? Heat cylinder with propane torch, to warm, then try pulling cylinder off piston. Repeat if necessary. If this doesn't work, hello dealer!
Good Luck

Well I got into the motor and the cylinder came off with not too much difficulty and have now found that the crank won't budge. Was wondering if the oil injection could have failed?? The piston is definately shot. The piston will move back and forth but not up and down. There was a little oil puddle under my quad this morning around the oil injector area. Any ideas about that one? I can't budge the rope to move the piston but I guess if the crank is locked up or the bearings are toast then it won't. I'm gonna take it to the dealer tomorrow to have him look at it. I guess I will be doing some modding now. Hey bubba how much do you charge to port cylinders again 110.00.? Anyone else with any of these problems? Any replys greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Duneaholic, I just finished splitting the cases on my trail bike and putting in a crank that I got from Rick Ritter. He only charges $135 for the rebuilt crank and the bearings and seals dont cost too much. If you can get a service manual and have a torque wrench, you can do it yourself. Once you get the motor on a table the rest is a piece of cake. If you want to pump it up now, I would be happy to port that cylinder for you. I charge $110, that's shipped back to you. That I can promise you would be the best $110 you can spend on it. The 400's really wake up to some port work. Let me know and if you want you can private e-mail me at ramseydb@***-internet.com. Thanks,Bubba
