Polaris warranty - does it require a class?
#1
My father-in-law, who owns several other brands, recently purchased a Polaris. He has received a letter from someone (I have not seen the letter yet) which asserts that the factory warranty is void if he does not return to the dealer and take a class.
Can anyone confirm this assertion?

I don't suppose it is the safety test/class? I know when you buy a new quad from Polaris, there is a requirement for the dealer to sit you down, view the safety video, go over safe operation of the quad, and then you must demonstrate safe operation of the quad in front of the dealer. This sounds like a pain in the a$$, and it is. Which is why some dealers disregard this, or like in my case, I have dealt with the dealer enough for him to know me and we agree verbally that we went though the course and am competent to ride the thing. Anyway, thought maybe this might be what he is talking about, but there is no way, that by not doing these things, that Polaris is going to void the warranty. (at least I would not believe this)

If he did not watch the video or ride the machine at the dealership he won't have warranty. When the dealer said he had a video to watch you father-in-law might have said he didn't want to watch the video. That right there says "no warranty". If he didn't sign the warranty registration form or ride the machine the dealer has to let Polaris know that he refused training.

When I bought my Sport in '99, I had to sit and watch a 17 minute video. I was told if I didn't sit through it, I would be agreeing to void the warranty.
After the video, I had to go to the parking lot, and show the salesman that I could shift from nuetral, to forward, to reverse. I passed the test, and trailered it home.

there must be some strick dealers out there. when I went to pick up my sp700 the dealer asked me had i ever ridden a polaris atv before (I said YEEEEES i Have) and he told me to watch the video (unwrapped; still in the plastic) and for me to sign a certificate certifying that i had watched the video and he had seen me demonstrate to him them that i was competent enough to ride. which i had not done any of this. while still standing at the counter; i just signed the certificate. He never told me anything about the warranty being void if I didn't watch the video or demonstrate that i new how to drive.

When I purchased my SP500HO, I had to sit through the video and have the check out ride. I was told it was required by Polaris. Nothing about it being required for warranty acceptance. And I had to do this even though the head mechanic at this dealership is my best friend and I have been riding with him for a while. The owner is very picky about keeping everything legal with Polaris.

Yes, it is a requirement. Polaris can be fined by the government for not making you watch the video. They either have to have you watch it in the dealership, or send it home with your promise to watch it.
I could see the logic of this if it was a person's first quad, but it is required to ALL ATV purchasers. Even if your first ATV was the mighty ATC90, and you have been driving one ever since, the dealer is still required, by law, to make you watch the video. A local Honda dealer had actuall gotten hit with a $5000 fine about 2 or 3 years ago for just running the paperwork through, and not making anyone watch the video or giving them a copy to watch at home.
