350x vs 400ex
#4
I have owned both for years, as much as I love my old 350X's, the 400 is faster - it weighs more but also develops more HP.
The 400 has a much better cylinder head, but a little lower compression.
The 350X develops more bottom - the 400 develops more mid & top.

Sorry buddy but a 400EX does not have more horses,,,,

Ahh... Always someone that won't take the simple answer..... Here we go....
----------
How do you figure?
The 350x has fewer cc's, a smaller cam, forked rockers, smaller head porting, a smaller carb, smaller valves, a poorer head design, etc. The only thing the 350 has over a 400ex is slightly higher compression.... I'd like to know your theory on how it develops more HP.
I've also seen dyno's that put the 350X with aftermarket exh 5hp down from a 400ex.
Here's another interesting bit of info for those of you that think because the 350X had a 6 speed trans it was faster on top than the 400EX:
400EX Gearing Calculator
ATC350X Gearing Calculator
Both calculators are loaded with stock information for both bikes - both turning the same RPM.
I've owned a 350x for almost 15 years - my family has had 5 of them, 3 purchased new. One of my favorite bikes of all time - however, I don't allow that to skew the facts when it comes to it's performance.

here we go AGAIN another guy who thinks he knows it all. just becuz he has BOTH of them...A 400EX makes pitty HP for a ''up to date model'' It is over rated. has around 25 HP. 350X has 27, which it would win in every terrian against a 400ex...........

Choose to ignore the facts if you like.
You can lead a horse to water.....
I was going to leave it at that, but I have a hard time leaving the mis-informed in their current status....

That's an interesting comment, I suppose a person that has never actually ridden the two should be given more credit than someone that currently owns both?
Another interesting comment. I think stock for stock it does well considering it's within 2hp of the "state of the art" Z400 and within 9hp of a stock Raptor, who's engine is more than 50% larger.
Fact is that the TRX400EX develops around the same HP as a stock TRX or ATC 250R - not too shabby (although they'll both pull it by a little in a drag race due to weight differences (i've also owned an 86 ATC250R for over 10 years).
I also find it interesting that if the 350X develops more HP and has more potential than a 400EX engine, that I've never seen a 350X engine swapped into a 400EX chassis. Even the fact that you could lose some weight with a 350X engine (due to the lack of a battery and magic button) hasn't swayed anyone I've ever talked to, seen at the races, or seen on the trail to perform this swap.
Back in the day, you would see 350X's swapped into 250R chassis', but that was done by people wanting a decent 4 stroke engine in a decent chassis, which wasn't available at the time.
Where the heck did you pull those numbers from? Did you find the highest dyno run you could find for a 350X and the lowest number you could find for a 400EX? One other interesting point of note is that most 400EX's come with the throttle adjusted improperly from the factory (throttle cable screwed all the way in), this typically only allows the carburetor to open 70%. Many of the early dynos on stock 400EX's were run this way, hence the main reason you see 24 and 25hp dyno runs floating around out there.
Take a look at the MSO's for each - the 350X is listed as 26hp, the 400EX is listed as 33hp. Further, I've got runs from the same dyno & same operator that indicate a stock 400EX (throttle corrected) is developing 27hp at the rear tires, the same dyno indicates that a piped 350X was developing 22hp.
Again, look at my above post on the engine differences, I'd like to hear your theories on how the 350X develops more power given it's parameters. I'd also like to know why Honda chose to gear the 350X lower if it's lighter in weight, building more power than a 400EX, and got an extra gear.
