Scrambler 400 X vs 500
#1
Found an Scrambler 400 X for what I think is a pretty good price $6500 CAD. I kind of was thinking about buying the 500. Is there much of a difference between the two. I ride fairly aggresively but nothing overboard. I hear the 400 is lacking in bottom end power is this true or is there enough in the low rpm's to maintain slow speed power when I need it. What do all of you think about the comparison between the two machines. The one I'm looking at is a 2002 which costs $8500CAD new without taxes. Do you think the price is right. And which one is better should I pick up the 400 or hold out for the 500 .Thanx for the help.

The 400 is a good machine but I got the 500 because I prefer low end power and a quiet, smooth running engine. I'm not a big fan of 2-stroke noise. I also think the 4-strokes start easier and last longer, that includes total engine life and the time you spend changing fouled plugs on the 2-stroke.

I have a 400X. I love it. I am 220 pounds. I have never been lacking in low end power. I do hills, lots of mud, and trails mostly. I can ride wheelies with little effort to get the front end off the ground. I don't want to slam the 500 though. I have rode one. I think it comes down to preference of 2 stroke or 4. I fel that both are equal in performance. I have not had any problems at all with plugs or anything. My dad has a 96 Trail Blazer. He just replaced the stock plug this past summer.

400 all the way. Nothing beats a 2-stroke for performance. I have a 97 sport 400 and a 2003 Scrambler 500 and the 400 is a lot more fun to ride and feels a lot lighter. It is in no way lacking low-end. There are also a lot of mods for the 2-stroke. The 500 is a lot sturdier feeling machine, engine wise though. It runs a lot smoother but it seems doggy after riding the 400. They are both good machines but I would always go with a two stroke.
