Polaris 500 4x4 not engaging
#1
I have a problem with the 4x4 on my Polaris 500 (it's a 2000 model) not engaging everytime. I took it to the dealer had it checked. The guy said it needed a new speedometer and Garter springs. Something about a senser in the speedometer.I just couldn't believe that could be causing it. What do you think ?
P.S.
Wants $490.00 to fix the problem

Change the fluid before you do anything else, low fluid or water in the fluid will cause problems. Make sure you don't overfill it when you change it.
If that doesn't help, there are quite a few other things it could be. Garter spring could need replaced, magnetic coil could be bad, the armature plate could have become magnetized or you could have a bad connection in the switch or elsewhere.

The newer Polaris do have a sensor in the speedo and when it goes out no 4x4 and lots of $ to fix.

I have a 2001 Scrambler 500 4x4 that was doing the same thing. The only time it would kick into 4wd would be when I would froor it. My battery is completely dead from sitting in the cold. I've just bought a new battery and haven't put it in yet. Could this be my problem? Is the 4wd controled by the electric power of the battery?
