Got some water in my clutch housing! (questions)
#1
well, went riding last night, tried a lil mission impossible and found out that fromt the bank of the creek is a steep dropoff and it was alil deep to begin with not to mention the lil dropoff into deeper water (kinda lil mini pond) and i was almost through but i had to jump of on a hill and climb onto the back and well i bout tipper the Xplorer over into the pond but me and my catlike reflexes help her above water, and i had a trusty friend safetly pull me ashore, and my belt was slipping, first time its done it to me, i think it entered in a hole covered in silicone and duct tape on the clutch cover, (meanin to get it fixed) so i shut her off for 15 min or so and let it cool then i started her back up and reved it in neutral and blew the water out the exausht duct, then it worked fine and worked fine today when i rode it, now getting to the point finally *sorry*, is there anything i shud check or oil or any precautions i shud take or check, any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Haz!

Nope that should do it, as long as you get the cover and the belt dry you shouldn't have any problems. But on the other hand, If you have a hole that is letting dust and dirty water in the clutches, they will not last long and you are looking at alot of money then. It would be much cheaper to replace the cover now than both clutches later.

Was the water clean? If you got muddy water into the clutch housing, you will want to take the cover off, and wash everything out good. The best thing to use is water out of a garden hose, and spray it around until the water coming out of the works is clear. Rotate both pulleys around some, and rinse again. Do not use a harsh soap, and be sure to let it dry out good before you put the cover back on.
Muddy water gets grit into the workings of the clutch, and that shortens the life of clutch buttons considerably.

this happened to me many times cause i ride in lot's of water & mud. the best investment i ever made regarding my sportsman was purchasing an updated belt housing exhaust vent. my old one vented towards the ground, allowing splashing water to enter. the new vent is blocked on the bottom & vents out the side. for what its worth, the next time you get into really deep water, nail it, water cannot enter the housing under moderate throttle. since i installed the new vent, i have never got the belt wet! hope this helps some.
