Ok, here is the setup I have.
Gears 15/40
Tires, Razr 23/22
CDI is a RW
Open airbox no snorkles with a K&N
TM42 carb, 150 main, middle clip needle and using the pump.
So, its baiscly the stage 1

I can run each gear to 8000-8500 no prob except for 5th gear. It stops at 7100 with a WOT. Nuthing left.... IN fact its hard in 5th after 6500 rpms...
I had this problem after the razrs went on even before the CARB and CDI.
I figured it would go away after I upgraded some things.

With 22 rears and 15/40 gearing I am steeper ( Faster top less bottom ) then the stock 16/40 with 20's

I am thinking of going to the 14/40 that would bring be below stock gearing and with the cdi I can rev it faster to keep the top end??
Is my logic worng? I would not suprise me if it was
I bet this is why people go to the stage II with cams and a piston

So will going with the 14 front resolve my top end and let 5th rev out?

Have you check your spark plug in 5th gear to see if you are lean or rich.

I have the TM42 with the 150 main. 97 needle in the 3rd clip.
I just changed the spark plugs. What should the look like? I heard mixed words on the DS and plug checking?

Mud - what kind of terrain are reaching top speed on? I get less top end offroad than I do on pavement. it does seem like you otta get a little more from 5th gear, I was able to hit 8300rpm with stock motor stock gearing and tires on pavement. Then again, maybe its just normal for the 22" tires, in spite of gearing change. Also, make the run both directions in case there is a grade you don't realize, even a tiny bit of slant can really put a load on in 5th.
Basically the jet that gives you the most power will be the one you want to leave in, and it should make your plugs a golden tan color, chocolate too dark, white too light. The contraversy over plug color is just that it takes a little longer to get good color on a DS plug than it does other bikes, but you still get it.

flat train bed I could not get past 65-67 mph. on a road I get 73.4
When I was stock I could hit 5th gear @ 7700 no prob. I think since I have 22's it ups my gearing. Your lower then I would be even whith the 14.
15/40/20 is lower then 14/40/22.
When I goto the 14 its like a 15.5 on STOCK tires and 40 rear. I orderd the sproket and it should be here. I will rip her up when I get it. I am affraid of keeping the front down. It comes up ALL the time on me now..

mud when i ran a stage I kit with the exact tire sizes you are running i had the same problem, tapping out in 5th. go down to the 14/40 and life will be good again p.s. stay away from the 43/14 is way to low.

i think it may be in your gearing, also. you could try 41 in the rear and that wouldn't take you so far.

My gearing story... At Glamis over the Pres Holiday I ran a 15/40 combo on gecko 21" tires. On the flat sand I can't hit 7800 redline only about 7000. But, I can easely beat my buddy on his stock Raptor with gecko's and one tooth smaller counter. So I buy a 41 tooth rear and slap it on(hoping to hit top RPM now), go to pismo this past weekend and now my buddy on his Raptor is dead even with me!!!!!!! And I still can't hit top RPM and it is slower now, So this gearing was a BAD combo! I did not bring the 40 tooth with me so all I could do was put the 16 tooth in the front back on. This again made me beat him, But it really lugs in 4th and 5th gear. UGH! I think a 16/42 might just be right but at $60 a test it is getting expensive to test combo's.

1ST,2ND,3RD gear are you'r pulling gears, 4th-5th will tend to much higher in ratio and harder to gear for without going really low. it depends on what you want to do. trail riding i like to tap out in 5th as fast as possible so i gear lower to run all of 5th. but when we ice race i like to gear up because most of the time i use the 1-2-3 gearing for most of the work, if i go into 4th or 5th ice racing i make sure i am completly wound up. but i do most gear changes w/40 rear because with front sprockets from 14t-17t i don't see much reason to change the rear out. my two cents. p.s. click on my camera i installed the king shocks yesterday!!
