Does this mean I am running out of HP on top?

baja mark i wasn't talking for the sand, mudstud is a off road trail rider. if you want the set-up for the sand on a stock machine 15-42 or 15-43, the 43 requires a chain replacement and if you want better hook-up get those geckos off of there. on one of my machines i run 15-42 20" 10 paddle haulers and it will run with any stock piped raptor. this is a great comb in wet sand. on the other i run 15-43 with 22" 10 paddle haulers , not as good in wet sand but as it starts to dry it changes quickly and will pull good. some people try 14 front and i haven't got to try this combo yet. these gears work great on the oregon coast.

Thanks SandMan, I ride in pretty dry sand most of the time. I have heard Haulers are the way to go for drags & Hills, but I rip around most of the time in the bowls which is why I picked the Gecko's. These bikes are so damn heavy, it's just getting them to stop spinning the tires! Oh well, life goes on. Here is a nifty site for gearing setups.

You can see a stock 16/40 w/20" tires is the same gearing ratio as a 16/42 w/21" tires. I have been running a 15/40 w/21" tires which is just a bit tighter than stock & a 16/41 w/21" last weekend, which was a bit longer than stock, BUT a little slower(5th gear hard to get), in the drags, than the 15/40 w/21" tires. Next step is to try the 16/42 w/21" tires. That might be the ticket for this 205lb, 42 year old racer from way back. WooooHoooo

Right now, I love the way the bike revs with stock gearing and stock 20" Ohtsu tires. I have all the quick mods - pipes, DM K&N and a RW box, not to mention the dyno tuning over at Sand Tech in LV, NV. I will find out how she runs with my 20" Sand Sharks this week end at Dumont. Is the stock gearing bad? Open desert the bike runs like a raped ape! will be dropping in the new 40% springs before I go this weekend. Really don't want to mess with gearing, but do they really lug the bike in stock form? Hoping to hit 4th up Comp Hill at Dumont. Any chance of that with my big A$$??

Shaneb, I talked to somebody down by the starting point of the sand drags after he kicked my but on what looked to be a stock 400ex, which turned out to be a 440 finely tuned. This guy had a Red helmet. I'm pretty sure his friend was on a 250r type bike not a 700v. Anyway, I ride with orange pants, shirt, shoulder pads, and a black helmet with white graphics. Oh, and a 2002 Baja. My kid is on a Yellow Z400. We were camped between pole 6 and 7. White Dodge Ram w/ cabover camper.
Bigdaddy331, With the 20" tires you have, your gearing is still stock, however, these bikes are so powerfull out of the hole, you will be spinning for a while before you hook up. Most guys use 22" Haulers and regear the sprockets for a place like Dumont (Big tall soft dunes). Have a blast, ride safe! WooHoo

Ok,
I put the 14 front sproket on last night. I will give it a rip and see how it runs. I cant test it until April 5

Shaneb,
Thats funny, when I was at our camp (The one with yellow caution tape, Orange corner posts and Teeki torches), I saw what I thought was you (red helmet) and said to my buddy, "Hey there is that guy with the fast 440ex" and he thought it wasn't, but I was! I guess you guys were just south of us!
Good talking to you there! I am really impressed with your work on your 440! I wish I could get my Bomb to rev better(4th-5th gears). I just seems like it has sooo much more to offer than it is now. My sons Z400 revs like a 2-stroke. The K&N, w/ 165main jetting, no cover, really added alot. At 70lbs, with his current mods, his top speed is real close to mine. But like I told you at Pismo, the sprocket change I had there was a big mistake.

bought a londer chain from sidewinder for the +2 swingarm. last trip to the dunes i ran a 40/14 with the stage III rwr kit and it seemed to low for drag racing ( i run the magnum 23" haulers) went thru the gears to quick came out of the power band to soon. going to little sahara in may plan on running 40/15 or 16 with the extra torque of the 760. i don't get enough trips to the sand to really do alot of gear testing, try to ride more than wrenching the whole trip
