If VOR made a lightweight (sub 350lb) quad, with a decent chassis (taking cues from aftermarket, 250R geometry), and gave it the 450 engine... that right there is all the basics you need. The key is to make it not unobtainable like the high-end Cannondales were.

i agree that canondale priced the high end units out of the market a little.
'not unobtainable' you mean.... like the Gas Gas quads? ... pay a little more (US$7000-9000) & get a whole lot more machine... long travel suspension, quality components, chromoly chassis, maybe EFI....
i've suggested this before, but what about a chassis that is built to accept more than one of the VOR engines? that way you build one frame to cut costs. suspension options include 2 widths, 46" & 50" to satisfy both XC & MX crowds and fits AMA rules.
in a race machine simple is good, functional is best, make the machine easy to work on... easy to get at the motor when you need to, i.e. in a long endurance event such as a 12 hours race... easy to make adjustments, etc...

I agree with Dual sporter on this one. One thing I'd like to see is the option like Polaris is doing with the Predator though. A base model with kits you can purchase for different type of racing. This will help to sell to more riders without having 4 or 5 models like cannondale did.
Say a base trail riding model for the average buyer priced to complete with the z400, 400ex, raptor, and so on. Then give the option to upgrade to racing/specialized packages, which would include tire/rim combo, shocks (set-up for rider weight and riding slye), and other stuff.
