Default right front tire wont disengage from 4x4 on Xplorer 400!!!

ahhhh why is this, i just put a new CV joint on it like 2 months ago, and now today, i was out riding and i took it out of 4x4 and the left tire disengages, but my right one does not, ive tried backing up and turing the handlebars but no luck, this is really bugging me where do i start? and also, *sometimes* ill be spinning in awd, and ill hear a POP sound i cannot exactly locate where its commin from but i think it may be up front, and it has done it in 2wd also, like ill be spinning in snow or something, and POP, cant figure it out, o ya and yet another thing, like in snow if im drving and spinning the right front tire will like engage itself and not the other when i have the button in the off position, does anyone have any advise or somewhat "same" circumstances?

Thanks, Haz!

The hub is probably locked. Check out the recent thread on Sportsman steering, that will give you some help. But it prolly needs new oil.

The popping sound could be from too low oil level in the front gearcase, or worn bearings in the gearcase, could also be worn shaft?? Does it make a clicking sound when turned? If it does it is a worn outer joint. If it makes knocks or clunks when accelerating after coasting, then it is an inner joint. If the 4wd is sticking in on one side ,then you may have old, dirty, or low oil in the hub. Check the oil level and replace if needed. If it has been a while, change it, but if you do, while you have the hub apart, check all the parts for wear and dirt, mud, etc. You could also have damaged wires from the right side hub causing it to engage/disengage. I would put my money on old, contaminated, or low fluid. You may also have parts magnetized, but like I said, fluid does alot. The best way to change it is to drain the fluid, fill it half full, drive around a little bit, then drain again to make sure you flushed it. Then fill the hub half full again. Turn the hub to the 4 or 8 o'clock position and let the excess drain from the hole in the hub. Then, it will probably work ok.

when it pops does the whole bike pop like loud and can be felt like through the handle bars?? mine did it this winter im pretty sure it was the huh locking up in 2wd.
i took both hubs all apart and cleaned them good and put them back together and filled each with clean hub oil or ATF and it seemed to fix the problem but... just the other day we got a little more snow and when i started spinning fast it poped again.

its really makin me mad im think of either selling it and getting somehting different without 4wd most likely not a polaris, or buying stuff to convert it to a 2wd. i think all that is needed is 2wd strut towers and hubs. It'll cost quite a bit but i think it'll be worth the weight savings and always worrying about breaking something.

id say take the hubs apart and clean them good and look for anything missing, out of place or messed up (broken) then refill with good oil or some kind of good ATF.
hope it helps good luck

Alot of times in the snow, the hubs can get packed with snow and cause problems because of the cold of the snow. It is a good idea to ride in no snow for about 10 minutes with the 4wd engaged to get the fluid warmed up a little, then go ride in the snow. Should help that problem.

LOL jag, you are exactly rite, i took the hub apart, and found that the spring on the 4wd clutch assembly was broke off, so that explains this mystery, i also took the other hub off, cleaned and re-oiled the unit, took it out riding, everything ran great, gonna check things out again today and hit the trails this afternoon, thanks for all the help all you guys!

Thanks, Haz!

Usually all you have to do is to put it into reverse for about 10 feet.
Otherwise you have a hilliard, hub or both bad and need replaceds
