Vague bad-running Xplorer question:
#1
I have an Xplorer400 with about 3200 miles. As of late she is not running that well. Started out with gas dripping from the carb when parked in the garage but now whwn riding she cuts out on full throttle and long runs and just doesnt have the "zip" she used to... Plus when I hit the gas the engine lags for a second or two then goes. Feels weak?!?!
Any ideas where to start? Would this just be cause for a new top end and maybe replace reeds and carbs' inner parts? I just want a place to start if any of you have had similar symptoms...
Thanks

Clean the carb. and put in a new plug, if you are going to store it for long periods of time drain the gas then you will always have fresh when you want to ride.

dried up gas in the carberator from leaving it set has pluged the jets, try pulling the choke out at full throttle and if that helps then that means there isn't enough gas getting through the jets because they have dried gas in them. The dripping overnight is from a bad needle and seat in the float, we replaced about 7 needle and seats the past weak at my dealer, the cost about $25, the carbs are a b!tch to get them turned so you can get the float bowl off, also make sure you have a very good philips screwdriver, the float bowl screws are in there tight and it only takes 1 turn to mess up the heads, we had trouble with one and ended up die grinding the head off, it was that bad.

The pre-99 Xplorers had the carbureter hung in such a way that they were subject to a lot of vibration. I am almost willing to bet you need a new float needle and seat. The vibration just wears them out. The gas dripping out is why I am guessing this. The float lets too much fuel in, and when you open the throttle, it takes a few seconds to burn off this excess fuel. Fire it up, drive it around a little to warm it up, and find a long, straight, flat stretch. Peg the throttle open, and get moving as fast as you can. If it bogs, sputters, coughs, and then after a moment starts revving out, but after it revs out a short while, seems to be running OK, it is almost certain to be the needle & seat. If you feel it may be something in the carb that is plugged, try opening the choke. If the machine runs better with the choke out, something is plugged. If it runs worse, it is already overfueled.
