KFX 400 or KFX 700
#1
First off I am new to forum been riding bikes and quads since 6 years old (Z-50) and have recently purchased a KFX 400 for my wife. Two days ago I sold my 87 TRX250X which Four Stroke Tech had done an incredible job on. It was fast and handle great. I am 36 years old and mostly ride hard trails, mud river crossing and maybe only 20% MX track. I am 205 lbs. and want to know from RPM and Orange Crusher (I saw you two have both) and anyone which they think would be better for me. I love the great acceleration and handling of the 400 and am worried 'bout the weight and shear size of the 700. Nobody around here has one so I can't even jump on one, please help i want to make a decision in the next few days. I love it

Kawy,
They are both Great Quads, but as far as Trail riding goes, I would suggest the 700 all the way. I have a Thread on here somewhere titled "KFX700 FIRST RIDE IMPRESSIONS" or something like that. It details my feelings on the good and the bad of the 700.
I have no reservations about telling anyone that I feel the 700 is the BEST 2WD Trail ATV on the market today. On the same hand, I don't think that in Stock form, that it would be a very good MX Quad. The 400 is a good Trail quad, but it lacks the Low-end grunt and the Low Center of Gravity that the 700 has, and a Major down-fall is the lack of Ground Clearance on the 400 (Due to the Chain Sprocket and Skid-Plate), where the 700 has plenty.
As far as riding in the Dunes, even though the 700 will go wherever you point it, I personally prefer my 400 when I'm out on the Sand.

I don't know where you ride, but where I ride the guys with the Chain driven quads, tend to have troubles getting through the heavily rutted stuff. On the down side, after my Big ol Shaft driven quad goes right up and through everything, I end up having to help everyone else get theirs through the ugly stuff. Before all the BLAH starts, I will state for the record that rider ability does make a big difference, but then again, everyone already knows that, right?
As far as Modding them goes, the potential of the Raptor is Impressive, where as the potential of the KFX700 is Yet to be known. Therefore, that statement is unsubstantiated at best.

Thanx for the info RPM and Crashman! I love my KFX400 but have gotten it stuck a few times already, I dread the day if i get the 700 to try to get that beast out of the mud., however on the other hand hopefully it will not get stuck due to the higher ground clearance.
Does the 700 ride as smoothly suspensionwise as the 400? Cornering and sway and stability better or worse?

Suspenssion wise, compring the 700 to the 400, there is a noticable difference. The best example I can give you is when we went to Sand Lake, OR. Sand Lake is Rough with a CAPITAL "R". I rode the 700 for the first half of the day and switched to the 400 for the second half. After having been on the 700, the 400 felt like an 8 second Bull ride, unless you had the power on, and got up on top of the sand. At lower speeds, it was all you could do to hang on to the handlebars. A lot of the smoothness of the 700 in the sand has to do with its weight. With all that said, I still like the Manual Trany 400 better in the sand.
The 700 has a plusher ride. It's like comparing a 70's Muscle Car to a 90's Sports Car. Big and Powerfull, to Light and Nimble. They will both get you there, they just have two different ways of doing it.
Naturally, the 700 due to it's Lower Center of Gravity and it's Wider stance, tends to be more stable, but you aren't going to throw it around like you can the 400.

Boy, I don't know about some people, they think they have to have everything. It's just plain ridiculess.........
Oh WAIT, who am I to talk? Oops. Nevermind.
Hey Congrats, you will love them Both.
Just a little pointer, the Lever on the left side of the handlebar on the 700 is NOT a Clutch lever!!!!
It's hard to switch back and forth sometimes.
