Oil Change
#1
I picked up the quads from their 20 hour check up & the dealer informed me that the oil should be changed ever 2-3 times you ride? This seems a bit excessive. I was thinking about every 100 miles or so.
How often do you change you oil in your ATV?

Depend on how far you ride, I have to change mine after ever ride because I often blow 400 miles a weekend
but if you just put around now and then, the twice a year works too, just dont go beond 500 miles on the same oil. Joe

According to Greg Hall (Tech Connection), you should change your oil after every five tanks of gas and clean the air filter after every ten.
Also, be sure not to fall for the common ploy from unethical dealers who claim that your warranty is void unless you pay them to change your oil. Consumer groups have taken this issue to court and won in your behalf. All you must do is keep a written record of the work having been done at the specified intervals.
Also, I would report any dealer who pulls such a trick to your local Better Business Bureau.

we change the oil and oil filter and we clean our air filter in our 300ex about every 6 months it isn't ridden much but when it is. It is riden hard I check it every time before I ride it (about 2 times a month)and hasn't been black yet.

I think the owners manuals assume you won't be riding the quad very hard most of the time, in which case 600 miles probly wouldn't be excessive (especially compared to 3000 miles in a car). However many people don't even ride 600 miles in a year, and the oil shouldn't sit there that long, it should be changed a minimum of twice a year. Probly the reason quads need changed more often than a car is because they run in dirty environments and run hotter (being air cooled), thus the oil breaks down faster. Also keep in mind that (in theory) synthetic oils last much longer than conventional oils, so you could probably go twice as long before an oil change.
