Default What is Boring? How does it Work?

Boring is a process of increasing the diameter of the cylinder by machining. in most cases, it's done to repair a worn or damaged cylinder, and always requires a larger piston to match the larger bore. sometimes it is done solely to increase displacement. the reasoning is simple, by increasing displacement, it gives the gases exploding inside your comustion chamber a larger area to push against, thus producing more power, usually more torque. also in doing this, the engine is able to increase the ammount of fuel & air it takes into the combustion chamber.... more fuel + more air === more BANG.
the process of boring is done in a machine shop and requires precision equipment and well trained operators to do... 99.99% of home machanics can't do it at home....
what's required to do it? disassemble the engine patially: remove the top end, slide the cylinder off the piston, take the cylinder to the machine shop with the new larger piston and have them bore it out... then re-assemble with the new piston, rings, etc. it may sound easy, but if you're not a very skilled mechanic, take it to someone that knows how to do it right.
