Default new - help me with carb jetting

Agreed as well. I just followed the common recommendations of others and reliable sources. I jet it till its tan then i leave it. If the top comes of it... I guess i did it wrong. (everyone i know jets atvs in this fashion and has not hurt any engines)

Default new - help me with carb jetting

First, thanks for all the responces and interest. on altitude about the same as TnDuc, not sure, i ride in the mountains of east KY. I travel a lot with work, stopped in two different dealers today, in different states, did not have jets in stock. I think i will look this week-end when i get home and see for sure what my jet is and just order one. any advice where i should order from. also while i'm at it i plan to check brake pad wear. i have about 600 miles on machine. are there any after market pads that are better (longer life) than OEM ones. don't know condition of mine yet but from reading posts understand they have a short life. thanks for info on tach, father's day is coming up may get one, a little pricey just to set idle and moniter rpm's.

Again THANKS Everyone

Bone Stock 03 400 manual irs

Tnduc, your right your 454 is jetted different from the factory than a 400i. I stated that I thought yours came with a 145 and that you should try a 140. As far as the fuel screw, set it at 1 turn out from fully seated(turned all the way in) since your at a fairly low elevation. Try it since you can always set it back to stock.

Tricat, you can buy the jets from your A/C dealer they run about $3.95 a peice.

Doober, an easy way to tell if you need to rejet is your fuel economy. If you only get 50 miles of easy riding on a tank then something is wrong. Also check plug color if it's black then your too rich. If you have a manual 400i then when you turn the fuel screw in to about 1/2 to 1 and 1/4 out you should notice the machine will feel snappier out of the hole. My 400i auto gets on average 20-25mpg depending on the riding I do. I am not a mud bogger so that is why my fuel mileage is that high.

All great suggestions. tnduc: I have the same engine almost. It is the same carb. I ride from 0-1000ft. I went from the 145 to 142 and the needle on 3. Pilot is at 2 turns, and as snox suggested i myself could go down a 1/4 turn. I could go to 140 main easy and be safe. BTW any dealer can get jets for this carb from kimpex. They are like 3.50 each canadian. They are the large round. (8mm)

You can not read a new plug.....leave the old one in. If the jetting is closer, the heat will burn the carbon off.

Well, I finally had a chance to mess with the carb- with no luck. No matter what I tried I could not remove the screws holding the float bowl on to access the jets. WD40, lightly tapping screwdriver with hammer, nothing. They were starting to strip and never moved. On the plus side, we got some heavy rain today so I ran a few mudholes on my property :-) .

TnDuc, I know this is kind of a dumb question, but i just rejetted and was having problems with those same screws also, did you twist the carb for easier access?? You have to twist it one way for 2 screws then twist it the other wat for the other 2. After I did the muffler mod I had to rejet from a 150 to a 158 and now my plug is a very pale tan, I tried a 160 but it just puked and farted at mid speed, my dealer said something about changing the mid jet??
