$75 for a valve adjustment???
#1
Dealer wants $75 for the 500 mile valve adjustment. Has anyone done this on 500i and is it worth it to have the shop do it or should spend the time to do it myself?
Thanks

I haven't heard of anyone saying it definatly needs to be done on an AC. Although I was reading in the service manual awhile ago and it didn't look to hard to do. I think the air box has to be removed, foggy memory, I'll try to look tonight.

The price sounds right. If you are confident you can adjust the valves properly then its really not hard to get to them. You can probly get in at the exhaust valves without too much trouble but its usually the intake valves you have to pull the tank to get at.I will probly take an hour or two.

My dealer did mine for free, he said that because he actually had to adjust one of them (intake was to tight) that my warranty covers it, so If I were you I would check into it. He also told my that it is very rare that they have to adjust them. Mine is a 2003 400i auto and it was done at about 300 miles or so.

MAN ITS EXTREMLY EASY TO ADJUST YOUR VALVES. JUST TURN THE PUSH ROD AND TIGHTEN THE LIFTER NUT UNTIL THE PUSH ROD GETS SNUG AND THEN TURN IT 1/8 INCH MORE AND YOURE DONE

That is the biggest load of crap I have ever heard ,follow these instructions if you want your 500 to run like a 300.
Sorry dude thats about as smart as telling someone to remove their flywheel with a hammer.

I cant help it YOU are not mechanically inclined..Get to top dead center on a warm egine and you got it. Use a feeler gauge and refer to your book. i believe it is .25 I cant remember,i did mine at 130 miles and will be doing it again at around 500. My bike runs with the best of them. 4 stroke not 2 stroke
dude youre on the wrong forum.
But just to inlighten all of us...how would you do it..mr goodwrench!!!

pull your seat, pull your intake snorkel, loosen up the two star bolts that is holding your tank down, remove your right panel turn your gas off, remove the gas line from the on/off gass valve, let the gas drain outinto a jar,or on to the ground, very little gas, then lift up a little on the end off your tank and slide her back and out of the molded groove. Now you have access to your cylinder head. You will see two removeable caps forward and oft of the head. You can inspect there. but you will need to remove the 4 or maybe 5 bolts from the camshaft assembly to get to your valves. the intake valve is on the left and the exhaust valve is on the right ,looking at the sprocket. i will send the adjustment specs later I cant find them so im waiting on an email from the shop
