Which octane do you use?

I'm sure most of you guys already know that gasoline is blended for your area. Not just talking octane. The 87 grade is blended specifically for your area. If you choose to use 93, I don't think it will hurt your quad but it's probably not going to change the performance that much. If you decide to do modifications such as head job, bore & piston, that may dictate your choice in octane. Which ever you choose, it's best to stay with that choice as is with oil. Don't compromise your machine by switching back and forth. However, it's still your choice...
Good luck,

Raced outboard 2 stokes for years and was a certified marine mechanic for Mercury and Johnson and Evinrude. Every oil made for 2 strokes has boosters in it to either maintain or increase octane. Some even have oxygen enhancers to make your motor have more air to burn.

I'm afraid not. I have two that I one day would like to piece together and get one running.
I grew up in Waskish (on Upper Red Lake) and a dealer came through one day and sold a bunch of them, my dad was one of the happy owners. Little town of 30 with 15 dirt bikes running around was pretty cool. I of course had to get one too but I was too little, shortly came my very own mini bike.
Like you said, it brings back some good memoreies.

First of all octane has absolutely nothing to do with how an engine revs unless it's been detonating. In fact if the octane is too high and the proper spark and compression is not there, you will build carbon in the combustion chamber due to unburned fuel carbonizing. This is very bad.
Like the others have said, use what the manufacturer recommends, nothing more.
High octane in an engine that doesn't require it can be fatal over time.
Ask any knowledgeable mechanic. Not your typical wrench turning moron found at dealerships.
If you've been using octane over what's recommended, I'd recommend running some Yamaha Ring free or other decarbonizing agent for 2 or 3 tankfuls.

REVHIGH:
A thousand years ago when you could still get real lead in you gas, I was given 400 gallons of 115/145 aviation gas. Put it in to my '69 11 to 1 428 Super Cobra Jet and the engine ran like crap. Talked to the fuel rep at the next race and he said to "much lead was causing intermittent lead foul on the plugs". Blended the gas with the Chevron Super of the day because it had no lead, but good octane numbers and the problem disappeared. However the was no increase in quater mile times or top speed so you are right about octane not helping if you don't have enough compression to use it.
