Cat 650 Fan
#1
Just got my 650 after a very long wait. Have only had it for a short period of time & with the weather being real cold here & the Elk Hunts are still going on, I don't want to go into some of my riding areas & tick-off some Hunters with my 4wheeler, so I haven't had a chance to do much riding.
My Prairie 650 had a great fan switch, as the fan would turn on even if the key was turned off, allowing the coolant in the radiator to continue to stay cool or at the proper temperture after a shut-down. Have any of you who have had your Cat 650s for awhile noticed this with the fan kicking on & off with the Key turned to the off position?

That tells me the Prairie 650/700 has a better set-up to cooling on hot day rides. Once I get my Service Repair Manual on the Cat 650 & since I still have the P650 SM & with the help of the Cat/Kawie mechanic, I'll see what is involved in setting up the Cat 650 fan switch as it was with the P650.

Basically, the fan is going to be connected like this:
----------------/THERMAL SWITCH\---------- +12V IGN
|
/MOTOR\
|
---------------------------------------------------------- GND
The thermal switch is screwed into the rad. It closes when the rad temp get's high enough. The motor is the fan motor. There is a possibility that the switch is mounted on the wire coming from ground to the motor instead of +12V to the motor. You need the +12V to come from a constant source (battery) instead of intermittant (ignition).

Thanks Wires, I will make a copy of this.
1st, I'll see how this Cat is compared to the Kawie 650 & the fan operation.
Maybe the Cat runs cooler than the P650, so Cat didn't hook up the fan the same as the Kawie.
Bad idea to leave the key on, engine off to allow the Fan to run as the fuel pump is pumping fuel to the carbs. You would need to turn off the fuel petcock each time you stopped to allow the key to be left in the "ON" position.

My fan didn't run that much after I stopped (I'd turn the key back on), but my thermostat was sticking, so who really knows.
I'll know more next time I'm out. Another thing with the key on: It increments your hour meter as well. So, if you leave the key on and the engine isn't running, the hour meter counts up.

The Kawasaki 650 VTwin motor which is the unit in the Arctic Cat '04 650 has a fuel pump, as you sit above the gas tank. The 6.5 gallon gas tank is not located high & between your knees like your 500 but under the right rear fender & seat.
Not sure why Kawie made the Prairie fan work this way but on long slow steep hill climbs & after a engine shut down the fan would cycle on & off. Sometimes the fan wouldn't run at all, other times just for a short period of time & a few other times the fan would stay on for a few minutes, turn off, then with'n 10 minutes the fan would turn back on, then off again after about a minute or so. The operation of my Fan switch on my P650 was normal and the coolant was always at the correct level. The other P650 that sometimes was with me, had the same fan operation.
The other watercooled 4wheelers fans would run too if the Key was turned on with the engine off but would not cycle on & off like the Prairies.
