Need advice on 454 BearCat Carb
#1
I have a stock 97 454 Cat with the carb mod done by the dealer for that model and it doesnt seem to give full power at speed and cuts out and pops.
I have recently had flooding problems on cold starts also. I have gone through it to check for any gum or stoppages in the jets and soaked in carb cleaner overnight and not much help.
Is there an after market set up that would make this thing run better. It has plenty of power on the low end it just seems that it needs more fuel at the top end?
My machine has 1378 miles on it and I am going on 57 so it doesnt get any rough treatment - maybe that is the problem!! I am too old for it and dont ride enough. It is used mostly around the farm and during hunting seasons.
Great machine otherwise
Thanks for any direction or advice, TwoDogs in Arkansas

My uncle's 98 has had carb problems on numerous occassions. Its a bad design on that model anyway, but his last problem was bad gas (rusty gas can for too long). He ended up buying a totally new carb and of course it runs fine, but thats not much help here. Some sort of jetting adjustment could help out, and maybe have your float height checked also. I wish I could answer this question. I've had his carb apart like 6 times cleaning it, but I don't have any adjustment solutions.

Check coil mount bolts for cutting out at high speed, ground for coil is on on of these. Check needle and needle jet tube for wear, hole gets worn and needle won't shut fuel off at idle causeing flooding at idle. Hope this helps.

I don't know what your dealer did, but you should read your spark plug and change re-jet as needed. Ckeck the idle jet screw. It is set at 2 1/2 turns out from the factory. Set it at 2 turns out after you change jets and see how it works. I run mine at 1 1/4 turns out and droped 4 jet sizes from the factory high altitude setting. Mine runs fine from 9000 down to 4000 ft, but lower than that I would have to jet up and higher I could jet down one more size. Good luck.

Do you have the add on primer? My 97 had the same problem and it was the primer letting air in the line. Easy to check, Just by-pass the primer and see if it works. The bad thing is if the primer is bad... you can't get a new one.
