Default noise while downhill braking

There seems to be a metal grinding or chain slapping type noise on my 500i ac manual while hard braking down hill. When I look down at the tire it locks and unlocks quickly while brakking. I believe there is some sort of play in the drivetrain somewhere. My question is this normal noise? Other atv's I ride with does not do this. The atv is a 04 500i man with 60miles. Also, noticed it mostly in 2wd.

when in 2wd the front drive shaft still turns so if your doing hard braking it mite be that drive shaft comeing to a sudden stop than when you release the brakes it starts going again but you mite want to check with the dealer just to be safe. my 04 500 man makes the same sound that your describing in 2wd just driveing it.

I will probably call the dealer today, but I doubt I will get much of a answer. Have you checked with your dealer about the noise on yours? Just curious as to what they might have said.

The sound is just the bachlash in the diffs going from loaded to unloaded. Completly normal.

Default noise while downhill braking

I talked to the dealer today. Earlier I jacked the rear up and ran it in 2wd and hit the brakes. I could see the whole tire assembly move, so I wiggles the tire side to side and there was some play. The rear left side has no play. I am assuming both sides should be free of play. I know the rear right has the brake assembly, but other than that everything should be the same. The dealer said bring it in it does not sound right. He said it could be a bearing or the nut that holds the hub could have loosened. I dont believe that is causing the noise but we will see tomorrow.

My 04 400i makes a simliar noise. It sounds like ball bearings rolling around inside the crankcase. You can hear it when you let off the gas and slow to a stop, but you really hear it when it's in neutral and you push it. It doesn't do it as bad in low range though. I took it to my dealer and the mechanic said it was normal, that it was backlash. I don't think it should make any noise. Let me know if you find out anything.

Default noise while downhill braking

Well, I received a call from my dealer today. The play in the wheel was caused by a bad right rear bearing. It has 18hrs and 114 miles on it. I wash all. the mud out every time I wheel. Guess we need to find some sealed bearings.
