Default Valve adjustment 400i

Can anybody tell me a step by step how to ajust vavles on the 03 400i. I know that I will have to
1] take off off plastic and gas tank in that area
2]open cover plates over valve
3] find TDS ?
4] is there a special tool to adjust the pins ?
5]
6]
7]
Thanks

My shop Manual Says to do the following:

1 remove the seat, side panels and gas tank.

2 Rotate crankshaft to TDC on compression stroke.

3 Using a feeler gauge, check the valve/tappet clearance. If clearence is not within the specifications, loosen the jam nut and rotate the adjuster screw until the clearence is within specifications. Tighten jam nut securely after completeing adjustments (no torque specifications found for that).

4 Replace covers and tighten screws securely (no torque specifications found for that)

ALSO has a caution to make sure the feeler gauge is positioed at the same angle as the valve and valve adjuster for acurate measurements of clearence.

400i vlave clearence specifications
Intake 0.05-0.10mm (0.002-0.004in)
Exhaust 0.22-0.27mm ((0.009-0.011in)

Just did this on my 400i and it took about 2 hours. Most of which was spend taking the plastic panels and gas tank off and puting it back on.

Hope this helps.

The feeler gauge should feel slightly 'stuck' in between the tappet and the valve. It should not fit loosely, but snugly, yet able to be pulled/pushed with slight force.

Same as on my Eiger.

Thanks guys
But will have to do this later as I have found some bad $$$ stuff going on with the camshaft.
I did some thing stupid, [won't say]. Was fixable no problem, but happened for a reason. Had to take the top off the engine, and found the shaft at the chain end where it sits on the head to be all messed up. All three areas, valve cover, shaft, head at that location look like a grinder went through there. Not happy. Funny thing is there was no change in performance. The only thing that was different was I started to hear a tic sound, valves. I am looking into fixing this. As I don't have a manual ....... yet will have to take my time. What you are describing sounds like what I saw when my neighbors oil pump was going out on his Honda. It got to making some real nasty noises on the top end and overheated.

It was a pretty ugly sight.

Arctic Cat has a tool avalible to set valves with, It breaks the jam nut loose then has marks on the head for adjusting the clearance. Works real slick, alot easier than tring to get a feeler gauge into the right position to get an accurate reading. Don't have part number handy but it is in dealers tool catolog.

Anton, you might try looking for used parts for the Suzuki Eiger. I beleive uses some of the same parts as the AC 400. I think that most of the stuff on the top end was changed though but not 100% for sure on that.

Contact your dealer and have them call Arctic Cat salvage. They sometimes have some good used stuff.
