Hey all,
I happened upon this site and thought someone might be able to help me with a question.
I've got a 03' 400i and this thing feels like the clutches are slipping when you take off. But as soon as the rpm's kick up a little the power seems to kick in like a 2 stroke power band. if you're crawling over techical rocks it doesn't have immediate torque you have to give it a lot of throttle if going from a stop. My friend has an 02 400 and his has torque right off the bat. One dealer told me that the 400's have a high stall speed in them therefore the rpm's have to be up before any power is put out. Anyone else notice this anoying sluggishness???

You have a different engine, the 02 400 is a 371cc liquid cooled engine, the 03 400's are 376cc air and oil cooled engines. Your's make it's power at a higher rpm, verse the older one makes it's power at a lower rpm. Nothing wrong with your's thats just the way it is. It's probably a little louder too.

I was having the same problem with my 400. I would be in high gear and not be able to climb out of big ruts. Come to figure out (with the help of my buddies on this site!) that "high" range is geared pretty high, if you are going slow, crawling, or any towing, use low. I have started to do that and now have no complaits.
Hope this helps, the 400 is a great machine. Good luck!

Thanks a bunch everyone! I was thinking maybe I had bought a lemon. Although we did go riding yesterday and it turned out to be an 11 hour trip. We live around Oak Ridge, Tn. and went to Windrock Mountain/Coal Creek OHV area. We ended up on some trails that were designated "difficult" but were more like "nearly impassible". We met a group from Ohio and one on a Raptor 660. My ole'cat did end up pulling the Raptor up the side of the mountain even where the Raptor's frame was dragging because of the low GC, so I guess I'd better not complain about a sluggish quad huh?
ride safe....
