Engine RPM's racing?
I have a 1997 Bearcat 454. Every once in a while the engine seems to race. I turn the idle down to get by, then after a while it stalls and I have to return the idle back to where it was. It seems to me like a lean condition that comes and goes. I inspected the boots to the carb and they seem fine. I was wondering if maybe possible a fuel screen in the tank that may be clogging up when low on gas or something like that? Any ideas? I am stumped on this one.

Sounds like its defintely leaning itself out somehow. My 400 does that if I start it up and let it run to warm-up but I forget to turn the fuel shut-off **** to the on position. The engine races as it burns the fuel out of the carb and its not replaced.
Yours could be caused by and air leak. Start the bike and spray WD-40 around the boots and see if the idle changes (try not to spray too much onto the exhaust).
It could also be caused by a plugged or clogged fuel line. You can drain the tank and remove the fuel shut-off valve and check the screen. Blow air throung the hoses. CHeck fuel vent hoses for clogges.
Possibly caused by a sticking float valve. Which would cause a problem similar to shutting of the fuel **** while running the engine. You would need to take the carb apart and clean to find out.
Throttle cable freeplay chould be 1/8-1/4 inch at the throttle lever.
This should give you a good start. Hope it helps.
