Putting in a new axel, is it hard?
#1
Hey guys, I did a boo-boo with my ATV, and it broke my rear "drivers side" axel. I do have the CD-ROM manual and the direction to install a new axel look pretty simple. I just want to know from you guys if there are any hidden tricks to it. I don't have a "slide hammer" but don't think that should be a problem. Also, I don't have any extra "lock nuts" as the manual also says not to reuse those, is that true? Thanks again for your help guys.

You can get the old axle out by yanking hard on it,if there is enough to get ahold of.No hidden tricks, just make sure you have a clip on the axle you are putting in,and don't bend it or it may not work and the axle will pop out on you.You can re-use the lock nuts.

I have had to replace 3 cv boots and the axle comes out pretty easily. Just yank the hell out of it and it will come. A trick I used when I was reinstalling the axle back on was I put the nut you have to take off on the wheel side back on about 1/2 and tapped it in this way so I did not round off the end of the axle.
Good luck let us know how it goes.. This will come in handy when you split open the CV boots. You will be a pro after the first one.

when you yank the axle out of the rear diff make sure there is nothing behind you most come out easy enough by my uncle had me replace a cv boot on his brand new 400 arctic cat and i had to yank so hard when it let loose i went rolling good thing nobody seen me and like bybob said after the first one you will be a pro and you will kinda wonder why people take there atv's to the shop for the simplest things?

Thanks for the info guys, I am going to be giving it a go this weekend. If it ever stops raining that is, I don't have an indoor shop to work on it.

What's the matter, you don't ride in the winter?? I use mine all year round, clothes just get added for the seasons. I don't own a sled, as the winters here change from one season to the next.
