2005 650 engine breaking ???
#1
finally got to ride my new atv a lil and went to go down a fairly steep hill in 4wd low and the lil sensor by the tranny was going crazy. It would like jerk back and forth or kick in and out as i would go down until i got over 3 mph. Is this normal, anybody else experience this. Doesnt seem right, any help would be great. Otherwise, the atv rocks. tons of power and more torque than my grizzly 660 had.

Sometimes it gets a little herky-jerky, but it works. In low range, it is the best auto tranny for engine braking that I've ridden. I wouldn't want anything else in the mountains, once you learn its traits. The only tranny that compares is the AC duramatic.

The problem is the belt is too loose. The tranny actuator just tightens the clutch sheeves. If the belt is loose, then the engine brake works for a bit, then the belt will slip (and you'll hear a chatter in the belt case), and then it will grip again.
Mine was delivered with a loose belt (did the same as yours did). I tightened the belt at 60 miles, and it's been fine until now (600 miles). I need to tighten it again, as it's doing what you said again.

What you have described going down hill seems to be normal. I think its just the belt griping and realeasing to slow the quad down, you can hear it making little noises, i like it...it means its working.
Sorry to get off topic but...Dan W, where did you get that cool looking Arctic cat back rest? That thing looks sweet.

It should never shutter unless the belt is loose. You'll find that if you apply a little throttle pressure, then it'll tighten up the sheeves and the problem will stop.

after break in or roughly 20 hrs of riding i was told from the dealer to check belt deflection due to the exzact problem come to find out belt deflection was almost an inch so i removed a shim been smooth ever since

Buckmaster I have a 05 650 also. I was told that the engine braking would kick off at 2mph and that all i needed to do is to apply a little brake and gas at the same time. Also where did you get the dynatek cdi box and how much if you don't mind me asking? When you installed it what kind of modifications did you have to do? Did you notice a big power increase?
