I'm amazed that anyone would use anything but Premium in an engine with a 11.3:1 compression ratio!! Over 10:1 usually requires Premium, even late model auto engines with sophisticated computer controls and knock sensors!
The Suzuki Z400 Shop Manual specifies: "91 octane or higher rated by the Research Method"!
Premium fuel is not 'wasted'! If operating conditions periodically require it, it is there. The slight extra cost is not even a consideration when weighed against the possible severe engine damage that could result from not using it! Since your engine is pinging, it obviously needs Premium.
PS: Always add StaBil to your gas to prevent fuel deterioration. Cheap insurance!
