Sounds like you are slopping fuel from the float bowl into the intake and flooding it out. Once the fuel evaporates it starts and run fine. Usually cause by a high float setting. Check you float level first(likely), then the float for being fuel soaked(unlikely).

He should have lowered the float level not raised it. To much fuel, plus more fuel means "still have problem". Lowering the float mean to make the float sit farther away from the base of the carb, you hold the carb body upside down(float chamber removed) and measure the distance from the top of the float to the bottom of the carb body. The greater the distance the lower the fuel level in the float bowl when carb is upright.

A month ago I bought a 04 500 manual, 107 miles, now has 140. Mine cuts out when the engine gets hot, when the electric fan comes on. Sometimes will not start, and backfires VERY loud, while starting. It acts like a vapor lock, tonight it happened, not as bad, but it is 40 degrees outside. Was happening at slower speeds putting around on rough trails.

More than likely the problem you fellas are dealing with is a spark problem, not so much a fuel problem. The stator in the 400's and 500's goes bad once in a while, and it usually happens when riding slow, or idling , or getting warm. What happens is a wire looses connection, and looses contact when it gets warm. It causes the engine to spit sputter, and die. Minutes or hours later it will start up and run fine, but once it gets warm it does the same thing again. Hope this helps!

This may sound odd but I had a bit of a similar problem with my 03 500. There is a peice of foam under the seat that kept getting sucked into my intake. Try it without the seat on.
