Default Rust on Muffler?

All,

My Muffler is rusting after two mud rides and washing just takes off the paint where the mud was. Is this a problem for you all and what kind of paint do you use for touch-ups. The kind they advertise for grills?

my '03 500 did the same thing. the paint flaked off from the day i got it and the dealer got me a new muffler. he said some weren't painted properly. the new one did what yours is doing. didn't take long to rust. i put a supertrapp on and that cured it.

If you want to stop rust on a muffler it's a pain because of the heating up and cooling down. It cause the metal to epand and contract which is hard for the paint to stay on. The easiest way is to get a stainless steel one. If not you will be stripping the old paint and using high temp primer then putting on several coats of high temp paint, color of your choice, white or black usually. The easiest method would be to take the muffler off your machine and do this. The muffler on my 2001 is totally rust colored and I ain't gonna bother with it. If it rust thru then the new one will get the treatment before it goes on. Any touch up paint needs to be High temp paint or it will just burn off.

A lot of high temp paints have to be " cured " with heat within 6 - 8 hours of painting. This can be done by riding it in a clean enviroment for a mininum of a hour or baking the part at 650 degrees in an industrial type oven. If you have a speed shop in the area, check with them to see how they are coating headers to prevent paint burn off.
