second winch control
#1
I just installed a warn winch on my 500 and it has a handlebar switch mount. Is it possible to install a socket so that i can use a remote or the switch. Or can you only use one control.

hey bear I like your new cat, is that a Harbor freight winch on your AC250?, if so how do you like it? and would I be able to use the same mount plate that warn sells? Iam very interested in the HB winch. you cant beat the price!

Arcticlion; Yeah, that is a Harbor Freight winch. A whole $49.95, can't be that. I don't know about warn mount kit but I would assume you'd would have to make some changes. I used the Arctic Cat winch mount kit, as it was readily available. I then played fast and loose with mounting the winch to the plate (minor mod to the base plate of the winch). Every time I have used it, once for me being stupid and about 9 times for them being stupid, it has worked fine. I did however not use their controls. I wired in a solenoid and switch. Maybe this winter I'll get fired up and install 3 more solenoids and have both in and out powered. Oh yeah, I bought a second one to use on my flatbed trailer, still uninstalled, so I think the are good winches. I found the same winch, except 4 times the price on one of the after market web sites and they make a mount kit just for it, but by then I had already done mine.

hey bear, one more question, did you have to drill some holes in the AC mounting plate? I can buy a warn winch at the dealership for $289...thats actually not to bad I guess for the warn winch and not have to worry about fabrication.......

Arcticlion; Why use the Warn when the Arctic sells the plate kit for $66.35 USD. Mine was around $50 and it fit like it was made just for it, oh right it was. Of course there was only partial wiring included but, wiring the winch the way I wanted it was easy for me as I was in electronics once in another life time. I have found that the Warn products are good but way over priced for how good they are.

hey bear, I actually found AC mounting plate for $44.96 at www.planetarcticcat.com (look under the winch section) I think my dealer has the same prices. My real question is whether or not the HF winch will just bolt on or will I have to drill some holes in the plate???

Arcticlion; I had to cut out a piece of the baseplate of the winch, then get longer screws for the base plate to winch so they would be long enough to go thur the mount plate. Since those screws are smaller in diameter than the holes that were there I made some bushings from some copper tubing. If you would like I will draw up what I did and e-mail it to you with instructions, it wasn't anything difficult. Not as easy as the 2500# kit I got with my '05 400 with everything included, but nothing the average guy couldn't do. Did take about a 1/2 hour longer is all.
