Default 03 500 trade for 05 400? yes or no?

Just wondering if this is a good trade, I like the locker, radial tires, and 2/4 wheel drive switch + no axel problems on the 400 but like the power of the 500. Would you trade or stay? I don't have the money for an 05 500. My 500 is new, Is there a big difference in power and reliability between these two bikes or are they pretty even? I know the difference between the two quads like air/oil cooled and liquid cooling, does it really matter. Horsepower wise is there a big difference? Thanks!

Thats a tough question. The 500 is heavier, more powerful and takes more strength to crank around.

I would say that you need to honestly evaluate what you need from a quad and let that be your base for changing or not.

There is always bigger better faster. - Visit any small airport to see an example of that!

Some need speed and agility. We average about 6 mph on technical trails.
Some ride alone or are not comfortable with wrestling the heavier machines off of logs or onto trailers
For most people the 400 would meet every need with a huge margin.- possibly not every want.

You might only need the 400 but there is a 650 - so you really wont be happy with the 500 either.

In my mind - there is no "perfect" quad. I have 4 and each plays a different role that the others cannot.

Example:
The Cat TRV's are not as good for plowing in tight places so I use the Polaris
The TRV's have the MRP racks for everything from coolers to bait buckets, chain saws and rifles.
The Polaris 500 HORSE cant carry two riders (legally) and,
The Honda 250 Recon fits in the ice fishing trailer where the others do not.
They all get used - for their best advantage.

It cost $25K for me to find out what I'm saying here to you - so choose wisely.

horsepower on both is 400cc-25hp. 500cc-30hp. speed ,they are pretty much the same. you will have a full diff locker though if you go with the 400. thats always a plus.i have an 02' 500,friend has an 05' 400. we go the same places. he does it a bit easier with the diff lock.
