Default Adjusting Carb Float

From where on the carb is the carb float level measurment taken? I believe my '03 500i float adjustment is 17mm, but I don't know where to take the measurment, or how that measurement is taken (carb inverted/upright/etc?). Is there be any difference in the float setting based on altitude?

Thanks -

Jim

Turn the carb upside down so the float is seated. You should use a depth micrometer to get an accurate reading. With the float bowl off, take a machinists ruler (steel ruler) and lay it across the carb. From the bottom of the rulers' edge just touching the float should be your 17mm. This is how I was instructed to do it, but ya never know I could be talkin ' out my ***.

Carb inverted. Measure from the flange on the carb where the bowl seats, to the top of the float(really the bottom). A ruler and your eyeball will get it close enough. The US measurement is .67", that's right between 42/64ths and 43/64ths. If being off by less than a 64th of an inch causes a problem, something else is wrong.

Thanks to all. And yes, I do have a manual, but the instructions are not definitive. I don't have a problem but am doing some re-jetting and wanted to check the float while the carb was apart, and set it correctly. I've done float adjustments before, but each is a little different in the details. Your instructions clarify.
