The closure of the discharge of firearms was just this spring.... and yes... because it was unerving to come out of a canyon into a target range that had been set up by six guys drinking booze firing semi autos at the path!

The cost of the concrete outhouse and the story of it's first vandalization with "either a quater stick of dynomite or homeade bomb" was from a Montana BLM offical at a recent meeting in Sidney. When the damage occured the contents of the outhouse were enptied to the walls, ceiling and floors of the outhouse and the stool had been blasted loose. The BLM sent a crew to repair it, only to find that the outhouse had been completely cleaned and fixtures all replaced and stool and such reattached by the local clubs. There may be structual damage to the slab/or tank, but it was in clean working order again. Last SAT. when I went to the area to ride with my family...it had been blown again, this time more damage was done then before, and it is unusable again. The entire interior of the outhouse is caked with 10 inches of ...well you can guess. fixture possible destroyed and I'm sure the tank took damage this time. It may be unrepairable. This area is not really patrolable... the nearest bLM office is 100 miles away and they only make it out there several times a year. Locals would have the best chance of catching and turning in the offenders but the location is 5 miles from town and nearly a mile from any house. It also has been a favorite "kegger" spot for local highschool for about 20 years. One thing is for sure that area is possibly in trouble. If nothing else the blm may have the outhouse removed. They put up signs out there too, only to have them blasted to bits... so the firearm discharge law only applies to those that obey it! There are a number of clubs and people trying to keep it open, but this sort of thing makes it unlikley to survive too many more years of expensive abuse. The BLM has a limited budget for this sort of thing, and critics would love to see their investment become a waste of resourses. The knotheads are helping!

Some have made the comment that "maybe" the groups opposed to such an area are trying to get it closed.... could be, but I'm betting it's just a bunch of carless drunk yahoo's...having a good time with explosives. On anothe rforum I just read yesterday about a group of teens lighting a car of fire at a remote riding area! When he came back from his trail ride it looked like war had broken out! His area too is in damger of being closed, because of people dumping trash out there and buring things, destroying things...etc... If you want to find the details and photographs...it is in KNik Alaska...

I apreciate your concern for our riding area Shonk...seeing that your several miles away LOL! We'll try to keep it open if you ever come out this way!

Buy the way..I do remeber that there is a sign there at times the calls it shortpine... all of the locals know about it from it's location on "marsh road". We have got to start controling our own groups...or we won't be riding anywhere!!!

Our daughter lives in Billings. Been to Glendive a few times. I participated in Muzzleloader contest there. You are correct it’s a full long day drive sure miss the safe and prudent speed limit.

Where I was going with this nearly all of the “damage” to the environment was done long before there were ATVs, snowmobiles etc, and for the boys getting tanked up being stupid that’s never going to stop. All these issues were caused by the government except for the Boys (they will grow out of it and lets pray no one gets hurt)

Off to work
