Default Need Some Help with Idle Problem on 2001 300

A few years ago I bought a 2001 300 that only had 300 miles on it. Every since I owned it, I can't get a good idle out of it with the choke off. It just barely idles and then sputters and stalls. I assume its running lean because it wont start in the winter and it pops when I let off the throttle (with the choke off). It runs pretty good with the choke on but it fouls plugs faster so while I'm idleing I have to leave the choke on and then once I get going, turn it off.

I adjusted every thing I could possibly adjust including the idle screw and it still sputters at idle and pops when I let off the throttle... I checked for numerous things including air leaks in the rubber tube between the carb and head, Air filter, etc...

Any ideas?

Its the pilot jet (slow jet) in the carb. Drop the float bowl, remove the pilot jet, and make sure its totally clean, in the hole that goes thru it. Look thru it like looking down a straw, and youll see light come thru it if its clean. Its a very small hole, and it plugs easily, sometimes it takes a very tiny wire, to dislodge the crap if its been plugged for awhile. If its so plugged you cant get it clean...go buy a new jet for about 5 bucks at the dealer.

Ok,
Being and Ex drag racer and pulling jet sizes every weekend, I think I can handle this task. I will pull it tomorrow and see how it looks. I wonder if maybe it has a burr or something in it from the factory, I cant believe it was running like this with only 300 miles on it....

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks

Its usually the quads that arent used much that have this problem. Its the constant evaporation and refilling of the float bowl, which causes the deposits. If its possible, leave the float bowl dry, if its gonna sit awhile, and it wont happen.

Ok, I'm stuck already.
Which jet are you reffering too (see the below link)? I think I'm safe to say that "C" is the main jet and I cant get "B" out, its in there pretty darn good..
I did end up running a small needle through "A" and "B" and then tried it but it still ran the same even after it was warmed up. It acts just like its missing at idle but runs great if your giving it gas.

Nice picture and labeling.
B is the slow jet, and A is the starter jet.
It should be removeable, it probably has a slotted head, for a small screwdriver.
Also remove the mixture screw, and flush and blow it out with compressed air. Count the number of turns , to lightly seated, before removing it, so youll know where it was. And id start at 1/4 richer(from old setting) and richer is turned further out.

Check the air bleed, its parallel to the intake venturi, on the air filter side of the carb opening. That could be plugged too.
Has the valve clearance been checked or adjusted on this?

Ok,
1. Got the slow jet out and it was clean as a whistle, wow is that a tiny hole.
2. Checked the air bleed and that was clear also.

Now I'm going to pull the idle mixture screw and check the valve clearance which has never been done..

BTW, how do you set the valve clearance? My owners manual says its a dealer maintanence thing with no directions?

I think I got it!!!!!!!!
Its purrin like a kitten at idle with no sputters. I think it was the idle mixture screw which I backed out 1/2 turn (2-1/2 total). Now it runs like crap with the choke on and purr's with it off, like its suppose too.

Now, the only problem is:
When I'm in neutral and give it some gas, it takes about 15 seconds before it kicks down to a low idle. Any suggestions?
If I can get that fixed, I will be in seventh heaven.....

Noticed this thread, and realized the same problem with our 1999 300.

Just bought the thing, and it is running the same way. Bad idle, with the air screw out 2 1/2 turns.

So would it be possible that this same fix on the 2001, would work on the 1999?

Also, just wondering if anyone has a detailed picture of the carb? Need to know if what we are adjusting is the right thing.

CFoster92,
Paste the below link in your browser and and then pull your float bowl off and see if it matches. If so just re-read and follow what hondabuster said.

I just need to figure out why mine has a fast idel for about 15 seconds when I touch the gass in neutral before it kicks down and then I will be running like new again. Then I need to replace both rear cv boots and I'm off on my trip.

I did a search on Google and found there are many that have the same problem with their Cats running poor at idle and popping when they let off the gas. Everyone basically says the same thing, check all the jets and idle mixture screw.
