question from the noob
#1
Just bought a warn winch from ebay, wondering if i need to also buy a mounting bracket with it. I haven't really looked that hard to see where it exactly goes either. I have a 2005 400 Automatic, also any tips on the install would be helpfull.

The plate and mounting kit makes the install not only neat and clean but easy. I did my 250 with just the plate and and used an aftermarket winch and fabbed everything else. But then I've been doing this kind of stuff for over 45 years. With my 400 I had the whole shootin' match; winch, mount and wiring kit; everything and for me it took less time but wasn't really easier. So I would say "How good are you?" and let your answer be your guide.

wow bear you been doing this fabrication stuff longer then i been alive but get the mounting kit and wiring harness and make sure you get a roller fairhead. they are very simple to hook up just make sure you take the time to run the wires so they won't melt on the motor. i can do one now in about an hour but the first one i did took me almost 2 hours so be patient.

Thanks guys for all the help so far, after looking at pics here and on arcticchat i have better idea on where its supposed to go. One more question on the wiring, after reading the owners manual it states that there 2 accessory wire leads near the front frender, is this where i wire the winch into, or is it just a straight lead to the battery.

Power for the winch comes straight off the battery with at least 4 gauge wires to the solenoids and then to the winch motor. The accessory power to run the solenoid with the winch switch comes off the accessory plugs and as far as I know the plug for accessory power for the winch in in the wiring harness that runs across the rear of the crankcase behind the cylinder. At least that's where is was on my 2005 400.
