rango, type "oil" in the search box above, and you will get an answer to all your questions. There are several different filters you can choose from. I have been using Napa filters in my Arctic Cats since 98 with no problems. If you are going to use a synthetic oil other than Arctic's, you need to make sure that it does not have "Friction Modifiers" or Molly, or your wet clutch could slip. Oil's with these additives will have a star type symbol that says "Energy Conserving".I would stay away from these types of oil. If you don't mind changing oil every 300 miles, there are several good conventional oils that will work fine. I have been using Pennzoil 10W 40 in my quads since 98 and my 98 500 manual had 4200 hard miles on it when I sold it and I had no problems what so ever. I am using Mobil 1 10W30 in my 650 V 2 because it has no wet clutch.
Good luck.
Good luck.

rango726 I know this is an old post and i've given this ifo on Oil a dozen time's or more , i have the same quad you have a 2006 Arctic Cat 400 FIS Ato ; and i still use the same oil i've used for my own quad's and my freind's and families quad's !
My owners manual reccomends an oil rated SE , SF or SG under API service classification , the Engine Oil Viscosity of 10w40 the Temperture's in your region of the country should determine the correct weight best for you ; where i live in North Ga. i use 10wx40 in winter and 20w50 in summer !
The weight chart in my manual has 0w40 as the most servere temperture , from -30 degree C or -22 degree F ; here in North Ga. i have always used Castrol GTX 10w40 in winter and 20w50 in summer with API Rating SH and SG Part No. 122 M !
I have a freind at my Local O'reilly Auto Parts Store that keep's this oil in stock for me , and like CATSKINNER stated above to avoid oil's with the *Energy Conserving* Star ; and also the Oil Brand's with the *Hard Drive* Label on the front of the bottle !
And like v2rider suggested the synthetic would be a better oil if you live in a harsh climit with winter's of Minnesota i would use the high dollar oil's !
I did have a cross refference chart for the oil filter's , i carried it around in my day planner for over a year ; but i went all through it tying to find it but just my luck i couldn't find it !
But you can run a search on oil filters like CATSKINNER stated the search on oil , that's where i got the cross refference chart i had and good luck !......

andrewwallon the only thing about the Arctic Cat oil isn't made by AC , it's made by the oil company who had the lowest bid ; that's what my Dealer told me !
She stock's the oil change kit's only for customer's who want's the AC oil and filter kit , she also carries an aflter market oil filter that she said is a better than the AC Brand filter's that again isn't made by AC ; i use the after market oil filter and Castrol GTX 1Ow40 in winter and 20w50 in summer !
I've used this same oil in all my quad's and never had problem , i ask my AC Dealer if it was alright to use the oil i have used in my first and second quad ; that's when she told me the oil i used before was better than the regular AC blend !......

I'm not fond of using synthetic oil in the ATV. The big advantage to them is that you can go 3000 miles between oil change. I only use regular oil (Cat) and change every 500 miles as recommended along with filter. It would be nice to change oil every 3000 miles if we were running in a clean environment. You know the amount of dust in the air and no mater how good you think that any air filter is there is dust and dirt getting through the carb and into the oil. I don't want that dirt from 5 time of no oil change building up in my oil wearing away at the engine. You have 5 and 6 times the dirt in the engine by the time you change using synthitic oil . Oil is cheap compared to engine rebuild. I once used a nylon stocking after the air filter and was shocked at the dust that was getting past the filter and would now be going into the carb; and I was running a K&N filter. That is why I now only use an oiled foam filter like stock or a UNI filter. The better it breaths the more dust that will pass.

Just got this letter;

The filters for the Arctic Cat 2006 400 is our 57937 oil filter and 24284 air filter. On the Wix web site, we do not show a specific snowmobile category but show snowmobiles under the catalog of "All Terrain Vehicles".
Regrettably we do not control the Napa catalog, but I will send in your concern of this issue to the Napa people.
We apologize for any issues this may have caused.
