Anyone know how to remove paint from plastic without hurting the plastic. I have a 500 Arctic Cat that has good plastic but the guy that owned it before painted it camo with spray paint. He did not do a very good job except that the paint stuck real good. I want it off without messing up the plastic if I can help it.

That is a good question TORK. How about sandblasting it? Or even a high pressured pressure washer?

Presure washing should get the paint off.Be careful because the pressure can put holes in plastic though.WE NEED PICS too!

 

No pics ( I don't know how to put them on here if I had them ), Unit is not mine but is in my shop. Guy that bought it wants camo off. High pressure wash did not work. He tried to scrape but doesn't want to ruin the plastic. This unit is 4 years old and only has 374 miles on it. The original owner bought it from dealer that I worked for at the time, took it home and camoed it the same day. The plastic is in good shape so we want to get paint off without messing it up. Spray on paint remover will just melt the plastic so we are trying to come up with other ideas.

not much you can do
, solvents will screw up plastic, so will sandblasting or an abrasive treatment, about your only recourse is to leave or repaint, or rebody......

 

Thanks, that is what we are afraid of. Sure wish we could find something to work. I heard about Honda cleaner that we used to clean bikes with, new cans say not to use on painted parts because it will remove paint. What are you supposed to clean with it?

I don't know abour removing the paint without scratching the plastic's , but if you can get it off GM has a special polimer compound they use to repair those mini vans with the plastic body panels. My brother in law bought a dark blue van first week he had it still under warrantee some lugnut scratched it up pretty bad and even punched some hole's in it, he thought it would take forever for the dealer to repair. But it only took 2 hours and the bodyman took his lunchbreak before starting on the repair's, came out looking better than new ! I'm thinking about getting some for my 06'AC400 just to see if it will work on my plastic's it might even work over the paint. It comes in clear form and they add the color to whatever you want it to be ! But i don't know what the cost would be for the stuff.................williebee

 

maybe you should try it in a small spot,see what it does to the plastic, not familiar with the product but it might work

 

Yeah i'm going to try it for sure, as a matter of fact my bro'in'law called me tonight about fixing the transmission on my truck, i blew the pump seal on my S-10 pickup on the way back from a ride at the RockCreek ATV trail's in murray county memorial day ! I was coming down the mt. in low the low range automatic THM 700R4 transmission as i've alway's done whjen i realized the speed was going faster than normal so i started riding the brakes to slow it down. I made it down the mt. alright then turned onto the pavement, The transmission shifted out no problem all the way to the stop sign! I did notice what i thought was fog drifting toward my headlight's at the stop sign but didn't think anything of it. But when i pulled out on the maim road heading home i only made about 500 yard's when it suddenly stopped pulling ! Wouldn't do anything in drive or reverse and i was only able to coast far enough to get the front wheels and cab off the road, with the rear wheels and longbed of truck still over halfway in the raodway lane. I was wreaking out, here i was a bilateral ampputee with both leg's off just the knee's stuck halfway out in the road with car's comimg off Fort Mountain running between 50 to 60 miles and hour just barely missing the backend of truck ! And i was about 15 miles away in the same county where i lost my leg's when me and my younger brother were trying to push a friend's car out of the road after he ran out of gas ! we were pushing it backward's me on the passenger side and danny my brother on the drivers side and dennis our friend pushing and turning the steering wheel and had just got it on the other side of the road and only ten feet from his driveway. We had to wait for 2 or 3 car's to go around us before pushing it to the other side of the road , and my friend say's to me and danny there's one more car coming let's wait for it to pass around us then we would have it out of the road in the saftey of his driveway. It was March 2nd 1975 and the outside temp was 8 degee's, i was out of breath and desided i'll just rest again't the hood untill the car passed ; when the last thing i heard was dennis yell get out off the road it's not turning ! Then everything went black, i came to lying in the middle of the road; now it was light when we were about the ten feet from his driveway ! And dennis and danny said i came to within a few second's after the crash, but i couldn't see my hand in front of my face untill touched my eye's i guess the blood was in my eye's i didn't even know my leg'swhere gone i kept trying to get up, and dennis kept telling me to lay still that i was hurt bad ! He wouln't tell me my leg;s were gone, i knew it must have been bad because he was crying , but i kept trying to get up and couldn't figure out why i couldn't ! And i told dennis i thought my leg was broken because it hurt even worse when i moved. Dennis kept telling me to lay still , and i told him to at least get me out of the road before another car came along and ran over me again ! So he dragged ne out of the road and i stopped trying to move then. And i did remember when dennis yelled get out of the road that i jumped up, Later i was told if i hadn't reacted the way i did i would've been took the hit at my waist and would've died on on impact. I remember going in and out of contisence, right after the crash and part of the ambulance ride Hamilton Memorial Hospital in Dalton. Ga. and when they rolled me into the E.R. ! I heard one of the Murray County E.M.T.'s say what do you want me to do with this bag , i sit up on the strecher and said what bag ? I heard the nurse say you mean he's contius,??? And The E.M.T. told her that i was in an out when they got to the sceen, and then i heard the nurse say he's going into shock ! The next time i came to i heard alarm's going off and nurse's came running in with a needle and sticking me and i was out of it again ! They kept me knocked out for three day's before they would let me stay awake for ten minutes at a time so my mom and dad and family see me ! They told me later the reason for the knockout shot's was because i would try to pull out the tubes and get out of bed an fight them ! I thought they were trying to kill me , I was 21yrs old and weight was 125 pound's when i lost my leg's just below the knee's and i was right about telling dennis i thought my leg was broke , infact both femure's were broken in two places and they were compound fracture;s where the bone's came through the skin ! My mom said when they let her and dad first see me when i was knocked out that i was as big around as a 55 gallon drum !!! Well enough of this and back in my truck stuck halfway in the road , that's what freaked me out the most ; i was afraid to stay in the truck and afraid to get out of the truck ! I didn't mean to make such a long post, but i just thought it would help you understand why i was so freaked out so bad ! I couldn't think straight, that i called a frantc 911 call . I couldn't start to calm down untill a Murray County Sheriff's Deputy pulled up behind me with those Blue light's Flashing !!!!! Well after i get my transmission seals replaced it might take at least a month or so before i can afford to buy some of the plastic mender to see if it takes out scratches in the plastic's. but i'll keep you posted when i get some. I've already got some light scratches on the edges of my fender's to test it on. I've seen some stuff on an infomercal on tv that's claim it remove light to medium scratches on auto paint finish's but those things are like a crapshoot !..........................GOD Bless you all............williebee

 

Try scrubbing the plastic with an SOS pad and some brake fluid. I know brake fluid will eat the paint off of vehicles with out much problem. Just dont scrub too hard and you shouldn't scratch the plastic up much either.
