Default some winch questions

i recently had my venom 2500# winch crap out so ive been looking for a new one i found the new outback series from gorilla. i am considering either the 3000 or 3500# winch. but my question is i can save some money by just buying the winch but im not sure that the gorilla will mount up to the one that i have already. its your standard model specific winch there all over ebay. so should i just buy the whole kit or can i get away with just the winch and will the wiring from the venom 2500 stand up to the 3500# winch.also is a 3000 or 3500# winch too much for my 06 arctic cat 400 4x4 auto thanks for you help in advance

I don't have an answer to your question, but I have a Venom 2500 winch. I have not used it yet. Is this a bad model? How did it work for you prior to breaking? Thanks.

alot of people like them i had nothing but bad luck with it mine wouldnt wind up right no matter what i did it would tangle i used it probably 5 times and i had to take it apart 3 times because the grease inside would wear away.this time its just toast i can fix it for like $20 which is no big deal but i want reliability.but again most people like them i wont buy another venom.ive had it for about 6 mths the dealer told me its not supposed to be used in mud water or sand........?? so whats it for. i hope you have good luck with yours most people do but they all recomend and i can vouch for this take it apart emediately and use a good synthetic grease the grease they use is crap.

I put a Venom 3000# on my 400. I haven't had any problems yet, but I haven't used it much. The winch may not hold up, but as far as putting a bigger winch on your 400 you shouldn't have any problems. The bike oughtta handle it. As for wiring compatibility, the winches are very similar as far as specs. I would think this would work. But don't quote me. Check and see what gauge wire is supplied in the 3000# Gorilla winch kit and compare it with the size wire that was supplied to you in your original mounting kit. Also PM Bear, he could probably answer that. He seems to be up on that kinda stuff.

Default some winch questions

Rango,

I would expect a 3000# or a 3500# winch to draw more amps than your 2500#. I am pretty sure that as long as the wiring used for the 2500# winch can handle it then you should not have a problem.

Other than wiring, what did the 2500# winch use as a contactor? (selinoid) Here again I would expect a larger winch to not use the same contactor due to it needing to draw more amperage.

Plus, I am not sure what you are pulling out but, I have not came across anything my 2500# warn winch cannot pull with the use of a pulley (block). Could save some $ by looking at a smaller winch (just a thought).

I am not sure about the mounting bracket or kit. I have a suspicion that the gorilla, venom, and warn winches all have the same or similar bolt style/pattern. If they do, mounting to your old plate should not be an issue.

Hope this helps
SJ

i have considered the 2500# im not pulling out anything more than my bike and some others.but i had some issues with my bike not being that stuck and my 2500# barely pulling me out but that was at a straight line pull no ****** block but im just learning that the ****** block will double my pulling power

I have a put together a 50ft 10,000# tow strap with loops on each end, a clevis hook, and a pulley with a hook attached in a small canvas bag.

When I need to really pull I attach the strap to a tree (or small anchor if I am on the beach) and put the pulley on the cable coming out of the winch. Then I hook the pulley to the clevis and tow strap. The winch cable comes out through the pulley and back to the machine where I leave it hooked to the loops on the winch mounting plate.

This one pulley doubles the pull, (5000# winch) and it has been very useful. I have also just used the pulley and a long piece of rope to pull others out with the wheeler and change the direction of the pull.

I have not needed it too often but it is very handy when needed.

I have also had problems with my engine dying while trying to use the winch because my battery was bad. I was told the amperage draw was large enough the 4-wheelers charging system could not handle it with the bad battery. So it died when you hit the switch to start winching. I replaced the battery and the problem went away.

So I do not know what kind of amperage my 2500# winch draws but I do know its quite a bit. I assume a larger winch will draw more amps.

They are fun to play with but I think its better to try and keep from using one altogether if necessary.

i agree swampy but its a nice insurance policy to have just incase.but i also just bought a plow for my quad so ill be using my winch often for that but i dont need big pulling power for that but i dont get the chance very often to really push my quad because no one i ride with has a quad big enough to pull the cat out just incase the winch isnt enough i believe the venom 2500# is 12 amps per hr and it varies slightly between models.i will probably just stick with the 2500# and buy the ****** block. but now if i could only find out about the mount the dealer hasnt gotten back to me. thanks again for the help

ALL the Gorilla Winches have the same exact bolt pattern as the Warn and my Gorilla Winch has held up perfect, its been submerged in water it pulled a car sideways and it pulled a full size Jeep Wrangler outta a mud hole and if you look at the Gorilla and the Warn they look and they are exactly the same in size, I can't prove it but im betting the Gorilla and the Warn is made in the same factory in China by prison labor.
