Default Battery sizes

Another thread discussing replacing batteries made me wonder, does it matter what size battery you put in your quad? I mean, if it's still an atv battery does it matter?

The short answer is "YES". What matters with batteries is "capacity" usually rated in Cold Cranking Amps or CCA. Physical size don't mean squat. I don't see a spec in either my Owner's or Shop Manuals, but the info will be on the battery. Don't go lower than the factory battery spec. Higher is good, as it will improve cold weather starting.

As Bear said, the physical size (length, width, height) doesn't mean anything as long as it fits in that battery compartment of your ATV. I believe ATV's are a 12volt system so you could theoretically use a 12volt car battery. The CCA is what gives the battery power to turn the engine over when cold. Higher the # the better.

I do not remember what the CCA of a stock battery is, but my replacement battery (which is not stock or from AC) is equivelent to stock. Battery prices vary depending on whether they are unsealed, sealed, or gel batteries.

The only thing to watch out for is which side the pos/neg terminals are on and the type of connecting posts that are on the battery.
