It would most certainly be a major change from a stock 400. You are aware that with the mods for this kind of increase that reliability is now a major issue.

bear 4570, ya i know, i think that was a miss print at 4 stroke tech and they mint to say 481 big bore, and even at that would be alot better than what the 400 is now. its only got 400 miles on it,so maybe itll losen up in the next 200 or so miles.im in no hurry to do this just lookin ahead so i can turn some 26s in comfort.

I understand the tire issue, but when I upgrade the tires on my 400, I stayed with 25s. Cheaper and easier than rebuilding the motor. Did you know that the crankcase is the same on the 400 and 500, so the bigger jug would fit, but the stroke would be lacking. Then again you could always get the 500 crank, rod, piston, jug and head and have a real 500.

i supected the 400 and 500 were the same but didnt know untill you told me,and the reason i suspected was.is that fore stroke trech says that kit is a 581 for the 500 also.you do have a big big point, dont know if im gona lol or cry your so wright, but if you go with the titanium rod one can adjust for stroke difference? ill put 25s on it before i buy a 500 water cool and put in it, or build on from scratch,i know i should have gotten a bigger one,but im fine with hopin one up. really think it would have alot more powerand rev alot better then a 500,and it turns out to be to much trouble ill just put 25s on it.

Rod length will do nothing to change the stroke, just compression height. To change stroke requires a crank change. Every guy that I know who has bored, stroked or done any real hot rod stuff to their engines have ended up with a "special purpose machine they can't ride regularly. Then they have to buy another machine to ride and their hot rod sits a lot because if they run it a lot they break it and it gets expensive fast. I know a guy with an old trike which he rebuilt and decided to hot rod with a big inch kit. He blew it up on the first ride after break in. Rebuilt it and blew it up on the 2nd ride after break in and now he rides it in the sand once a year because it is to expensive and to much trouble to fix all the time. Admittedly this is an extreme case but it can happen. Oh yeah, he works for a quad dealer and get discounts on parts a services.

ok! ill leave it stock except for mods like pipe, carb, jets, ect. think i will put a vinson carb on, jeted to 128 or so,and a air cleaner kit ,and when i do tires think ill stick with 25s. the reason im thinkin this way now is,i went ridin yesterday and rode all day on 1/8 tank of gas,was in the woods in between trees in mud holes.point being turns out ,is could not use all that extra power even if i did have it.met a guy with a 750 brut force twin, and rode with him for 2 hours on the trails and mud holes, and he couldnt use the power and speed any more than i could,so the 400 works just fine, and so fare has alwas got me home for diner.

Glad to hear you are liking the 400 better. I stepped up from and 2001 Arctic Cat 250 (now the wife's) to my 2005 400 and always felt it was a big improvement. This last summer my 400 had a sticky shifter problem and went to the shop. So for one of the weekday rides I took her 250 out. Smaller, lighter, more agile and the guys (360 Kawi, 500 Suzuki and a 660 Griz) I ride with claimed I was riding fast than I normally do on my 400. I had a ball, wasn't near as tired at the end of the day and used even less gas than normal. I've never run out of gas on a day ride with my 400 and it uses twice what the 250 does.
